Arthur Rubinstein - The Artist He was a wellknown pianist-artist all his life, but not until Taken from HaroldC. Shoenberg s article arthur rubinstein which appears in the brochure of http://www.arims.org.il/artist.htm
Extractions: Above all pianists - indeed, above virtually any musician of the last fifty years - Arthur Rubinstein represented in both his life and his music-making a unique joie de vivre . That alone would set him apart in this serious musical age, where there is a high degree of skill but very little charm or poetry. Arthur Rubinstein was able to communicate joy in his playing. He loved the piano, he loved the music he played, and he was always able to charm audiences all over the world with one of the most extraordinary personalities that this century has seen. Of course that charm was buttressed by the mind of a superb musician, and by the fingers of a spectacular technician. Rubinstein coaxed a big, sonorous, golden tone from the instrument, and his fingers were in total command of anything in his repertoire. And that, paradoxically, was true even when he dropped notes or smudged passages here and there. For it was clear that a sloppy episode resulted not from lack of native ability but rather from sheer scorn of pedanticism. He was daring, he took chances, and if a few notes suffered en route that was unimportant. He was a natural, born to play the piano, and when he was on the concert stage one felt as though the piano itself was welded to his body. Musician and instrument were one. innigkeit of others, or the egoism of still others. Rubinstein played every piece in a natural, healthy, extroverted manner, with sweep and a big line, with color and fire. As he played, everything sounded natural and logical.

At age three, Rubinstein began to study piano, and within five years he had given his first public performance. When Rubinstein was ten, his mother took him to audition for the famous violinist, Joseph Joachim. Impressed by the young boy's performance of Mozart, Joachim agreed to be responsible for his general and musical education. Leaving her son to study in Berlin, Rubinstein's mother returned to Lód´z. He would never return to live with his family. C hopin's music formed part of Artur Rubinstein's cultural heritage, but although born in Lodz in 1887 and Polish by birth, Artur Rubinstein was by training a product of the great 19th century German school of piano playing. After some rather unfortunate experiences with inadequate teachers in Poland, Rubinstein left for Berlin under the protection of the great violinist and colleague of Brahms - Joseph Joachim. Joachim was instrumental in Rubinstein's introduction to Heinrich Barth , one of the most important pedagogues in Berlin whose later pupils included

Extractions: "On stage, I will take a chance. There has to be an element of daring in great music-making. These younger ones, they are too cautious. They take the music out of their pockets instead of their hearts." B Joachim, who remained the young Rubinsteins close advisor, introduced him to Heinrich Barth. It was under Barths tutelage that Rubinstein made his first steps toward serious performance. After only three years of study in Germany, Rubinstein made his debut at the Beethoven Saal with the Berlin Philharmonic. He played works by Mozart, Chopin, and Schumann, as well as Camille Saint-Saenss Concerto no. 2 in G, which he would continue to play throughout his career. Amazed by Rubinsteins performance, one critic wrote "He played everything, not as a child prodigy, but as a mature, adult musician."
