Saxophonist Branford Marsalis led his high-octane quartet through material from his new album, Requiem (Columbia), the Neville Brothers aired out the funk and pop of this year's Valence Street (Columbia) release and Big Easy rock and roll was injected into the mix with the likes of the Radiators and Better Than Ezra. Out-of-towners often turn in inspired work for the event. Los Lobos, perhaps invigorated by three side projects with new releases, offered a preview of their forthcoming This Time This year, it's the jazz contingent on the rise, with several artists poised to follow Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Donald Harrison, and trumpeters Terence Blanchard and Nicholas Payton, among others, into the limelight. Astral Project, a quintet whose versatile members also led their own bands and played in other groups throughout the Jazz Fest, may be the most deserving of the latest wave of talent, although they've been at it for two decades. Why Classical Music Needs Rock & Roll -- Greg Sandow That s the first marketing lesson rock roll can teach Look at michael Jackson, lookat Prince, look at tell us what makes one conductor (or pianist, or soprano http://www.gregsandow.com/whyclass.htm
Extractions: There's been some action, too, I know. Record companies offer classical CDs with perky cartoon covers. The three tenors have been marketed almost as a pop act. And, in an unusual but not completely atypical move, the Columbus (Ohio) Symphony having discovered that Harley-Davidson riders are as upscale as its usual audience built a marketing campaign around the joint excitement of symphonic climaxes and motorcycles. Some of these approaches might even work, but at best they're experiments. What classical music really needs to do is step back, to attack the problem as a whole. And if anyone really wants to do that, I know the perfect place to start Shea Stadium, whenever the New York Mets bring in their closer, John Franco. Picture the scene: It's the ninth inning, and Franco swaggers in from the bullpen to finish a game. The sound system blares what's virtually his theme song, Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." The crowd sings along with the famous refrain "go, Johnny, go" and what's remarkable about all this, from a classical music point of view, is that there's nothing remarkable about it at all. We all know the song, and why wouldn't we? It's nearly 40 years old, a beloved rock & roll classic. This is the world classical music now lives in a world in which rock (or, more accurately, the whole range of modern rock-influenced pop, which ranges all the way from country music to hiphop) is part of the air we all breathe. How can classical music ever reach new people, if it doesn't understand the music those people already love?

Extractions: by Jared Johnson Ive come to expect new and wonderful things from these four fellows, and as you can hear for yourself, its not in their dispositions to prove disappointing. Jon Schmidt, Paul Cardall, David Tolk, and Michael R. Hicks have each painted a few strokes on a new age canvas emerging as the newest masterpiece among LDS instrumentalists. Piano Portraits is a brilliant compilation from those who can now be labeled the top four contemporary LDS pianists. The Fab Four Jon, Paul, David, and Michael each lent two songs from previous albums and included a new one. The result is magic. In Covey terms, there is some serious synergy going on the whole is assuredly greater than the sum of the parts. Each song is at the same time a lullaby, a hymn, and an anthem of introspection. Lets dissect what makes this a winning album.
