An indifferent student and self-described social outcast, Bloomfield immersed himself in the multi-cultural music world that existed in Chicago in the 1950s. He got his first guitar at age 13. Initially attracted to the roots-rock sound of Elvis Presley and Scotty Moore, Bloomfield soon discovered the electrified big-city blues music indigenous to Chicago. At the age of 14 the exuberant guitar wunderkind began to visit the blues clubs on Chicago's South Side with friend Roy Ruby in search of his new heroes: players such as Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, Howling Wolf, and Magic Sam. Not content with viewing the scene from the audience, Bloomfield was known to leap onto the stage, asking if he could sit in as he simultaneously plugged in his guitar and began playing riffs. Bloomfield was quickly accepted on the South Side, as much for his ability as for the audiences' appreciation of the novelty of seeing a young white player in a part of town where few whites were seen. Bloomfield soon discovered a group of like-minded outcasts. Young white players such as Paul Butterfield, Nick Gravenites, Charlie Musselwhite, and Elvin Bishop were also establishing themselves as fans who could hold their own with established bluesmen, many of whom were old enough to be their fathers.

That's where the world-renowned singer and pianist, who will soon perform in the Bay Area, stores his astounding collection of memorabilia from the Golden Age of American song. Among the prized possessions he keeps in the basement of his elegant L.A. home: autographed sheet music from Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jule Styne and other great songwriters; the original manuscript of Gershwin's piano variation on "But Not For Me"; and a 1924 score of "Rhapsody in Blue," signed by the composer. He's got tons more paintings, posters, knickknacks all of it priceless, and much of it actually bequeathed to him by Ira Gershwin (George's lyricist brother) and other master songwriters from Tin Pan Alley. Feinstein not only became one of their top musical interpreters over the years, in the case of several he also became a trusted friend.
Roll Reviews.htm The British pianist michael roll shone in Beethoven s first concerto. He is a formidable virtuoso with a splendid technique, conjouring http://www.terryharrison.force9.co.uk/roll reviews.htm
Extractions: MICHAEL ROLL REVIEWS West Australian Symphony Orchestra/Tuomas Ollila - March 2003 "This was a performance of all-embracing splendour. Deeply probing in its more expressive episodes and scintillating in virtuosic passages, Roll's reading took us into rarefied territory. The finale was unforgettably fine. In one of Beethoven's most successful essays in musical humour, Roll evoked its outbursts of backslapping joviality and peekaboo insouciance with the kind of playfulness that brought to mind Zequinha Abreu's 1943 piano hit Tico-Tico. And the lyricism with which he clothed the central largo was musicality of the highest order. Roll's accounts of Beethoven's 1st and 3rd concertos have been so exceptionally fine that WASO might consider mounting the complete cycle of Beethoven's piano concertos with him as soloist - it would be a musical coup for the city." "After his WASO performances, Roll followed up with a piano recital at the Octagon of works by Beethoven. His account of the Scherzo from the Sonata in C from opus 2 was deeply impressive, the Trio section surging with rugged power. In its more reflective moments, Roll played in gently lyrical fashion. His passionate account of Schumann's colossal Fantasy ended a memorable recital from a prince of the piano." Neville Cohn, The West Australian

He opened an electrical and record shop in Walthamstow, East London in 1955, doing his best to promote jazz. Then in 1965, together with Jack Harvey and three other friends, he founded the internationally acclaimed magazine Storyville. In 1968, along with John R.T. Davis, he produced the booklet Mortons Music and he began publishing a long series of jazz books, several of which he wrote himself. Major works by Laurie include: Mr. Jelly Lord , King Oliver, Fats In Fact, and the Jug Bands of Louisville. By June 1995 the Storyville magazine had reached 162 issues, all published on time a notable achievement. Since retiring in 1995, Laurie has produced four follow-up volumes of the magazine and he now continues his researches in a more leisurely way. Prof. Lawrence Gushee

Extractions: As a teenager in the mid-60s, Michael Frank was bitten by the blues bug via such British Invasion bands as the Yardbirds, Animals and Rolling Stones. Observing the simple fact that these bands were covering material written by then unknown (to him) names like Willie Dixon, Chester Burnett and McKinley Morganfield, Michael did his homework, which led to the discovery that these compelling songs were written and originally recorded by black blues musicians. In 1965, Michael had the opportunity to see and hear Muddy Waters at a Jazz Fest in his hometown of Pittsuburgh. Shortly thereafter, a Thanksgiving weekend performance at New York's legendary Village Gate club where he attended a double-bill featuring Lou Rawls and Muddy added more fuel to an already burning fire of interest and growing admiration for black blues music. Today, Michael fondly recalls "That was one of the best bands that Muddy ever had, with Pee Wee Madison (guitar), Otis Spann (piano), Georgia Boy Luther Johnson (guitar), Sammy Lawhorn (guitar), Harmonica George Smith and (drummer) S.P. Leary!" Michael's increasing thirst for "the real thing" stimulated him to start "Buying hundreds of records when I was in college: Prestige, Arhoolie, Yazoo, Delmark. I got a local record store to order their complete catalogs and I'd buy them wholesale." The few books chronicling the music's history were also absorbed along with issues of the English magazine
