On the contrary - it is my strong belief that musical expression presupposes a broad perception of what is going on around you. You can't convey emotions through music when you have never experienced them yourself. That doesn't mean that one should get involved with anyone and anything just to gain experience, but I regard it as an obligation to open my eyes and never stop enlarging my general horizon.

Of course it all began a little less demanding: on May 3, 1976, Philipp J. Richardsen was born in Vienna, Austria. His parents, a Viennese M.D. and a German entrepreneur of Danish descent, soon realized their newborn was unusually prone to any kind of sounds. By the age of three, Philipp had managed to create his own songs that he would sing until his parents would try to moderate his temper. Two years later, he eventually discovered the piano and received his very first piano lesson. "It was quite tough as my first teacher seemed like Methuselah to me; he was almost deaf and very strict, and he immediately insisted on learning how to read music. I could hardly reach the pedal and was already practising major and minor scales," he recalls those times. Soon after, his mother gave birth to a little sister, and his parents started their search for the best possible musical education for their son. In 1986, 10-year-old Philipp was invited to enter the piano class of 82-year-old Susanne Dressler in Vienna, who had been studying with music leading lights like I.J. Paderewski or Maurice Ravel in her youth. Additionally, he was admitted to the Music Conservatory in the city of Linz as a - due to his young age - associate student. "Professor Dressler was a phenomenon," he says. "Her huge experience, her wisdom and supreme ease as a teacher were features that I will benefit from for a lifetime. She reinforced my interests in humanism and belletristic literature, which made a whole new world open up for me."
