Extractions: Reviewed by Neville Cohn An Overview After a long illness, emeritus professor Sir Frank Callaway, arguably Australia's best known music educationist in international terms and founder of the University of Western Australia's School of Music, died, full of years and honours. Mere hours after his passing, a message of congratulations he'd dictated from his sickbed was read out to an emotional gathering to launch long-time colleague Wallace Tate's book The Magic Touch, a treatise on piano technique and one of the most significant works of its sort to come off the printing presses in years. The W.A.Symphony Orchestra notched up 75 years, a notable milestone marked by the publication of Marcia Harrison's book Celebrating 75 Years as well as the commissioning by the WASO of fifteen Australian composers to produce 15 short works for orchestra. The last of these, by veteran musician Peter Sculthorpe, featured in the WASO's last Master Series concert for the year. The 15 works will be released on an ABC Classics CD in 2004. Of all W.A. music organisations, incidentally, it is only the WASO management which has tackled the endless problem of audience coughing in a practical and effective way by continuing through 2003 to offer throat lozenges gratis to anyone wishing to use them. It's a long-standing initiative that might to advantage be emulated by other concert managements

They are Ajenai Clemmons, a senior from Greenwood Village, Colo., and Zachary Nunn, a senior from Altoona. "It's rare for Drake to have two students selected as state finalists for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarships," said Julian Archer, professor of history and director of post-graduate fellowships at Drake. "Having two finalists shows that Drake is attracting exceptional students and that our faculty members are doing an excellent job of refining the intellect of the students who come here." As part of the state-level competition, Clemmons and Nunn will be interviewed by the Iowa Selection Committee for Rhodes Scholarships next Wednesday in Des Moines. The student selected by the committee to represent Iowa will advance to the district competition. Each district's selection committee may elect up to four Rhodes Scholars. Iowa is part of district six, which also encompasses Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Herbie Hancock See: http://afgen.com/herb.html Herbie Hancock was born April 12, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, into a musical household. His musical training began with the study of the piano at age 7. Evidence of Hancock's musical prowess appeared took little time to emerge; he gave his first public performance two years after beginning and by 11 he had performed Mozart's D Major Piano Concerto with the Chicago Symphony. Although during his early years Hancock was encouraged by his parents to listen to classical music, his interest turned to jazz in his high school years. Also, in high school Hancock's interest in electronics emerged and he decided to attend Grinnel College and Major in electrical engineering, but in his second year of college, he changed his major to music. After graduating from college, Hancock, age 20, went to New York with trumpeter Donald Byrd who heard him play in Chicago. While in New York Byrd introduced Hancock to Blue Note Records executives. This led to work with various established jazz artists and later Hancock's his first solo album, Taking Off, which included appearances by Freddie Hubbard and Dexter Gordan. Contained on this album was Hancock's first top 10 hit Watermelon Man. It was not long before Hancock got the attention of the legendary Miles Davis, who extended an invitation to Hancock to join his new group. With this group Hancock began to pioneer what would later be called fusion as he, through his original compositions, melded ideas of funk and rock with jazz. Hancock took this opportunity to introduce himself to synthesizers. Headhunters (1973) was the first album on which Hancock used a synthesizer. Up to that point his work was acoustic with the exception of a Rhodes Electric Piano. Hancock purchased his first synthesizer, an Arp String Ensemble, the same year he made Headhunters and incorporated it into the album. The album, which became the largest-selling jazz album in history contained "Chameleon," another of Hancock's crossover hits. Incorporating synthesizers at this pace was mitigated by Hancock's experience with electronics and aptitude for the subject. After a few years, Hancock returned to his roots as an acoustic pianist with the V.S.O.P. Quintet, a recreation of Miles' band (without Miles), and several other Jazz Artists.

My writing of the evening and sending it to them is my way showing the depth of my gratitude. We became friends through the appreciation of wine. Yes, it was the God-given grape, its blessed wine that created this friendship. I am realistic: I am an old man. I am nearing 89 and facing my lifes not too distant setting sun and purple dark horizon. So when people much younger than I, so much younger oh, blessed be their younger years seek to soften my loneliness with their concern and compassion, I become moved and mellowed and I immediately listen to music appropriate to my mood. Fittingly, I am listening to soul-stirring the disc, Violin and Piano Duets, by the Boston Duo of pianist Ellina Blinder (Drs. Blinders daughter-in-law) and violinist Lilia Muchnik. It was Saturday, about late afternoon. Dr. Boris was on the phone. Peremptorily: Julian! I have some great wines! I want you to try them! We will have a little dinner! Marshall will pick you up at 7! Goodbye!
