Extractions: Home Archives Births Business ... Weather March 4, 2004 Front Page Public places smoking ban thoughts mixed By Tom Carosello Staff Writer Should Archuleta County ban smoking in public places? That question was the centerpiece of a brief discussion comprised of varying opinions during Tuesday's meeting of the county board of commissioners. Speaking in favor of a public smoking ban, Commissioner Mamie Lynch, board chairman, stated she believes such a measure would benefit not only the community's health, but image as well. "I am very offended when I drive down the street and see people smoking in front of the courthouse," said Lynch. Lynch also conveyed she respects the rights of individuals to smoke in private domains, yet added she feels "very strongly that we should protect people" from the dangers of secondhand smoke often associated with bars, restaurants and similar establishments. Apparently, potential support for such a ban could come from a number of local entities. According to Lynch, initial feedback stemming from conversations she has had with Pagosa Springs Mayor Ross Aragon indicates town council could be presented the smoking-ban issue in the near future. The San Juan Basin Health Department, said Lynch, is also interested in pursuing the subject - a notion verified by health department officials during a separate presentation later in the session.

Interlochen Center for the Arts students, faculty and staff will also perform in concerts, theater and dance productions and visual arts exhibits to make for more than 500 events during the season. Interlochen President Edward Downing said the "All Summer Long" theme reflects both a schedule that opens early - June 11 with good-time rockers Hootie and the Blowfish and new sensation Shawn Mullins ("Lullabye") - and concludes Sept. 1 with new-age showman John Tesh, as well as a strategic effort to bring in new and diverse guest artists.

Extractions: (April 12) - Israeli musicians record more and more discs these days not only on local labels but also on international ones. One of the most exciting discs I have heard in quite a while is the one in which the Jerusalem Trio plays the two Brahms piano trios (DOREMI DDR-71132). Yaron Rosenthal (piano), Roy Shiloah (violin) and Ariel Tushinski (cello) are simply extraordinary musicians whose music making is exemplary and exciting, whose interpretation is straightforward, and whose performance is riveting. Such a deep and round overall trio sound is rare to find. (To order try the DOREMI web site at www.doremi.com/~doremi/). AMONG the recent batch of Jerusalem Music Center discs, a most delightful surprise is the Aviv Competitions (JMC CD-119). The three works on this disc are performed with youthful gusto and zest. Ido Bar-Shai presents a very credible and thoughtful reading of the Bach b minor partita in which he neglects the baroque aesthetics and concentrates on a very modern approach, which works because of its directness and his very round sound.
Extractions: (February 16) - The Jerusalem Music Center independent label of discs devoted first and foremost to the promotion of young Israeli musicians has recently issued four discs: The Huberman Quartet playing music by Dvorak, Janacek and Klein; pianist Aviram Reichert playing two sonatas by Schubert; duo pianists Gil Garburg and Sivan Silver playing music by Mozart, Schubert, Debussy and Natra; and the Aviv Competition 1999, featuring music by Bach, Prokofiev and Bozza played by the winners of the 1999 Aviv competitions for young musicians. Next month a new disc featuring the Jerusalem Trio in music by Ravel and Shostakovich will be issued.

Extractions: Winning Cliburn contest doesn't always bring fame LA Times-Washington Post News Service Quick. What do Ralph Votapek, Vladimir Viardo and Simone Pedroni have in common? All won first prize in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, enjoyed bursts of fame and now languish in those fields of obscurity known as ''whatever happened to ... ?'' This Sunday in Fort Worth, the Cliburn will crown a first-prize winner for the 10th time since the competition began in 1962. The lucky pianist will win $20,000 in cash, plus concert engagements and recording opportunities worth almost $250,000. And the second-and third-prize winners, as well as the three other pianists named as finalists late Monday, will scarcely come away empty-handed in this richest of all international music competitions. But there's one thing the six finalists cannot expect to win Sunday evening: lasting fame. If the law of averages holds, the lucky young man or woman who is the winner - five Cliburn finalists are male, one female - will be forgotten in a few years, another casualty laid to rest in the crowded graveyard of Cliburn winners. That only one first-prize winner in nine Cliburns - Radu Lupu (1966) - has gone on to a major international career does not call the judgments of the contests' juries in doubt. It is merely to say that it has been a long time since winning a major international competition was a predictor of lasting fame or even of a substantial performing career. There are simply so many competitions - literally hundreds - that a first prize, even in a competition as prestigious as the Cliburn, has ceased to have much meaning.

It's inevitable that with every new year, we set aside various resolutions. Whether it is to 'lose 20 pounds' or 'exercise more,' each of us are guilty of making the pledge, but come February 5 th , well I hope all of you took a chance to read the forum focus article in the October/November 2003 issue of " American Music Teacher ." As you know, I am an independent music teacher in a small community, so this issue was very important to me. In addition, in our own state of Wisconsin, many school boards are being faced with massive budget cuts, and unfortunately, one of the early areas they seem to eliminate is the Arts. Both zoning issues and the attitude that music is nonessential is an area we, as members of WMTA need to advocate. As educators, we need to become more 'proactive' in our community and in our organization. Try to remember that one of the most important aspects to being a member of WMTA/MTNA is not 'so my students can participate in auditions.' We are a network of over 24,000 independent and collegiate professionals. Alone, we are nothingbut as a group we can have a loud voice. As the AMT article states, the support this teacher received from MTNA was fundamental to saving her studio and career.
