Extractions: This is an excellent disc in a number of ways. One of its characteristics is that it is a condensed survey of the entire piano music output of Rachmaninov. Let me explain. There are three works on this disc; the Five Fantasy Pieces Op. 3, the Second Piano Sonata in B flat minor and the Corelli Variations . Now the Opus 5 was written shortly after the composer's student years came to an end. The Piano Sonata dates from his fortieth year and the Corelli Variations was the very last original composition for piano, being written in 1931. However that is not all. Two of the Five Fantasy Pieces were revised as late as 1940 and of course the Piano Sonata was itself reworked by the composer eighteen years after it first performance. So we have a conspectus of Rachmaninov's achievement over a period of nearly half a century.

Extractions: ``Brief Encounter,'' that magnificent 1945 tear-jerker, is a small masterpiece of subtlety and realism in all respects but one. The acting of Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard is restrained but moving, David Lean's direction is a model of the craft, and Noel Coward's story is a touching account of the guilt and frustration surrounding a stymied love affair. The one element that doesn't fit with all this is the score - Sergei Rachmaninov's piano Concerto No. 2. While the main characters maintain the English tradition of keeping the upper lip stiff while everything else sags, Rachmaninov's music trudges darkly across the soundtrack, every emotion fully indulged. Because it doesn't fit, it's actually quite an effective contrast, and a fine illustration of the power of Rachmaninov's music. The last of the Russian Romantics, Rachmaninov was born in 1873 and had the misfortune of living to 1943, a time when Romanticism in the arts was denigrated and the only music taken seriously was rarefied and abstract. After half a century, Rachmaninov has been forgiven for having been a living fossil, the last representative (aside from Richard Strauss) of musical ideals that had been out of fashion since World War I.

Extractions: For Irvine World News It's not often an orchestra schedules works by two composers sharing a common theme. It's even rarer for a soloist to be involved in both. But that's the case with pianist Valentina Lisitsa, who makes her Irvine debut Saturday collaborating for the first time with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and music director Carl St. Clair in Sergei Rachmaninov's 'Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini," Op. 43, and Franz Liszt's "Totentanz" (dance of death). The orchestra and St. Clair also will offer Emmanuel Chabrier's "Espana" and Maurice Ravel's "Bolero," arguably each composer's most popular work.

Extractions: It is tempting to explain Sergey Vasil'yevich Rachmaninov's lifelong outward stoicism, the icy demeanor he always exhibited when performing, as a protective mechanism acquired slowly and painfully in his youth, when one difficulty after another presented itself to a sensitive, naturally withdrawn young man who was nevertheless determined to make his way in the world as a musician. He had little help from his parents. His father squandered the famiIy fortune so quickly that Sergey was only nine years old when he saw the estate at Novgorod where they had lived, the last of their property, auctioned off to pay debts. By that time Rachmaninov was studying piano with his cousin Alexander Ziloti and composing prolifically. He would endure further hardships, but at least his genius was also being recognized, and he began to gather champions to his cause. An early convert was the older composer Peter Tchaikovsky, who attended the performance of his graduation piece, the opera Aleko. Tchaikovsky was to have conducted another early Rachmaninov work, the symphonic fantasy The Rock , but he died before being able to do so (Rachmaninov responded by writing an Elegiac Trio in his memory). Another ambitious early work. the
