Extractions: Misery Loves Company I'm too happy to enjoy Rachmaninoff as much as I used to. When I was a suffering, insufferable teenager, he was my favorite composer. During my first semester in college, I wallowed in my misery to the tear-jerking melodies of this latter-day (1873-1943) romantic. Here was my soul-mate: a composer who shared my depressions, insecurities, and longings for acceptance and love. My roommate at the time - a vulgar, tasteless, oil tycoon's son from Wichita, Kansas - referred to this world-class composer, pianist and conductor as "Rocky." I almost killed him, but he dropped out of school, and my life, before I had the chance. I shall always love Rachmaninoff, but I doubt that I shall ever relate to his music quite as much as I did back then. Misery loves company, and Rachmaninoff kept me company, record after record, day after day. Starting with his most famous works - the Piano Concerto No. 2, the Symphony No. 2 , and the Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini - I expanded my record collection to include every Rachmaninoff composition that had ever been issued. I even learned to play his most famous piano piece, the Prelude in C-Sharp Minor, myself - no small feat for someone who rarely attempted any work which wasn't in C major. The Second Symphony, like the Second Piano Concerto, is one of Rachmaninoff's indisputable masterpieces, even though he himself didn't realize this. "I give my solemn word," he said after finishing it, "no more symphonies!" Nevertheless, he broke his promise - only once - some 30 years later.

Extractions: Conductor - James Stobart To those familiar only with the piano concertos, Rachmaninov's "Symphonic Variations" will prove an exhilarating introduction to the rest of his inspiring output. Cast in three colourfully orchestrated and contrasted movements, the music is an apt summary of his life's work. The original titles of "Noon", "Twilight" and "Midnight" were withdrawn by the composer "so as not to give too much away". The first movement has elements of a march surrounding a central episode in an almost Mahlerian "countryside" vein. After a short muted introduction from the brass, the second movement settles into an exhilarating waltz, full of seductive melodies and rhythms. The final movement nods more than briefly at a Spanish idiom with a lyrical middle section of pure Rachmaninov warmth and feeling. Index

Extractions: SERGEI VASSILYEVITCH RACHMANINOV (1873 - 1943) Sergei Rachmaninov was undoubtedly one of the greatest performers ever and nobody who heard him playing Beethoven'sAppassionata, Chopin's B flat minor sonata or the Liszt transcriptions of Bach readily forgot him. Rachmaninov's father was an aristrocatric landowner who resigned his commission in the Cavalry's Guards of the Imperial Russian Army and retired to his estate in the Novgord district where he became involved in various musical activities. Lyou Boutakovia, Rachmaninov's mother had been born into a wealthy family and was also very interested in music so that when the four year old Sergei decided he wished to play the piano it was his mother who gave him his first piano lessons. Inside two months, Rachmaninov had achieved what a normal child would take two years to accomplish on the piano and was playing quite difficult works to visitors. Soon his mother engaged Anna Ornazkaya, an ex student of the St. John Petersburg Conservatoire as his teacher. Despite his interest in music Rachmaninov's father wanted him to enter the military academy at St Petersburg but his mother was equally insistent that he should go to the Anton Rubinstein Conservatoire in the same city. The matter was resplved when Rachmaninov obtained a scholarship to the conservatoire and as his father had squandered all his money he ws allowed to take it up.

Rachmania - A Brief Personal Account On Sergei Rachmaninov A Brief Personal Account on sergei rachmaninov (1873 1943) In 1917, rachmaninovleft his motherland Russia to his virtuosity as a concert pianist as well http://people.brandeis.edu/~hin/MUS02.html
Extractions: As Geoffrey Norris argued, the piano figures prominently in Rachmaninovs music, either as a solo instrument or as part of an ensemble. But he used his own skills as a performer not to write music of unreasonable, empty virtuosity, but rather to explore fully the expressive possibilities of the instrument (Norris, Section 6). Indeed, the exceptional virtuosity of Rachmaninov allowed him to magicfy the expression of the piano to the instruments fullest extent through his usually lengthy and melodic compositions. Beethoven, Czerny, Liszt, Chopin, Anton Rubinstein, and all those who follow down the list expanded the limit of the piano via commanding techniques, but it was Rachmaninov who magicfy the keyboard with the wild excitments and unprecedent charisma of his compositions. Other composers created passion through their music, Rachmaninov created fevers via the piano. None of those who suffers from Rachmania should be infamiliar with Rachmaninovs Piano Concerto No.3 in D minor, Op.30 what his fans usually nickname Rach-3. Lauded by Bryce Morrison as arguably the most daunting and opulent of all piano concertos (Morrison, p.4), Rach-3 explores the limits of the piano to its innermost depth. Rachmaninov begins the concerto with a unison of both hands on the keyboard accompanied by simple harmonies from the orchestra, playing a simple yet daunting theme on which the concerto is built; and the rest of it is simply a showcase for the musical techniques and emotions that no one musician would not envy. Through this masterpiece, the composer successfully created the rare opportunity for the worlds finest pianists to demonstrate virtually everything they can deliver via the keyboard from the explosivness of the first movement to the sentiments of the second, and to the excitments of the finale.

Extractions: Sergei Rachmaninov , also Sergey Rachmaninov or Sergei Rachmaninoff April 1 March 28 ) was a Russian composer pianist and conductor Born in Semyonovo, near Novgorod into a wealthy family with a strong military background, Rachmaninov had his first piano lessons with his mother at the family estate at Oneg. After a decline in their fortunes, the family moved to Saint Petersburg where Rachmaninov studied at the conservatory , before going on to Moscow , where he studied piano with Nikolay Zverev and Alexander Siloti. He also studied harmony with Anton Arensky and counterpoint with Sergei Taneyev. While still a student he wrote this one act opera Aleko , and the set of piano pieces, Op. 3, which contains the Prelude in C sharp minor, probably Rachmaninov's most popular piece for solo piano. Rachmaninov's first symphony was premiered in 1897, but was a complete flop with the critics. Some have suggested that this was as much due to the conducting of Alexander Glazunov , who may have been drunk, as it was to Rachmaninov. The bad reception led to a nervous breakdown and complete loss of self-confidence for Rachmaninov. He wrote very little music until he began a course of therapy with Nikolai Dahl. The result of these sessions was the Piano
