Extractions: The great russian composer By Nina Yajontova April 1st marked 125 years since the birth of the great Russian composer, pianist and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff. "I write the music which I hear playing inside me, he wrote. "I am a Russian composer, therefore my temperament, outlook and music are quintessentially Russian..." With the appearance of his more mature compositions in the early 1900s, Rachmaninoff built himself a strong following among Russia's cultural elite. His individuality was shaped at the time of a growing political and cultural upsurge in Russia, a time which spawned such artistic giants as the great opera singer Fyodor Chaliapine who was a very close friend of Rachmaninoff's. They first met each other at Savva Mamontov's Private Opera in Moscow and the two men continued their friendship working together at the Bolshoi Theater where Rachmaninoff had been invited to work as a conductor. Sergei Rachmaninoff's genius was immediately visible no matter what he did, but his talen shined the brightest as a pianist playing a number of sold-out concerts both in Russia and abroad. In one of the many books about Rachmaninoff, we read about the famed pianist Artur Rubinstein being asked to name his choice for the best pianist around. "Horowitz, he said, "Yes, Horowitz is the best..." "And what about Rachmaninoff?" As if remembering something, Rubinstein said: "No, you're talking about pianists, but Rachmaninoff is something absolutely different" and, raising his hands into the air, he looked up...

Extractions: Sergei Rachmaninoff Sergei Vasil'yevich Rachmaninoff had a rough chilhood. His father was a drunk and gambler, wasting his wife's estate and then abandoning the family. With this foundation of instability and being unasved, Rachmoninoff had a hard time adjusting to life as a young man. His extrodinary talent as a pianist is what brought him fame that no doubt would not have existed otherwise. After various failures and successes in his training years, Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote his First Symphony in 1895. It was met with severe criticism which brought on "the composer's worst crisis of psychic distress and lethargy..." (1). He thus entered a time when he could neither write nor play music. He was then persuaded to visit a certain Dr. Nikolai Dahl, specialized in hypnosis. In 1900, from January to April, Rachmaninoff daily "visited the doctor's somberly velvet-draped chambers. From the quiet, Dahl would repeat over and over: 'You will begin to write...you will work with great facility...the music you write will be good music.' "(1) What this produced was Rachmaninoff's famous Second Piano Concerto . Rachmaninoff said later, "Although it sounds incredible, this cure really helped me. I began to write..new musical ideas began to stir within me - far more than I needed for my concerto."(1)

Extractions: This all started with a "Consumer Guide" I wrote for the Village Voice, New York's big alternative weekly. I listened to 17 recordings of this suddenly popular concerto, and wrote 17 quick paragraphs, with a grade attached to each one. Poor David Helfgott got an F; Vladimir Horowitz got an A, for his version with Fritz Reiner conducting. (Though a later Horowitz release, a live performance with Eugene Ormandy, only got C+.) You can read this adventure, right here on this site. Much later and by a happy coincidence I was asked to write about the concerto once again, this time for the Los Angeles Times. In fact, I was asked to defend it against critical attacks, which I was happy to do. The more I listened to it, for my Voice consumer guide, the more I loved it. And I enlisted two very articulate pianists to help me defend it Alexander Toradze, and Byron Janis. This piece, too, is available here But you want to hear the music my comparisons of six pianists playing the same Rach 3 excerpt. Sergei Rachmaninov :: Online Encyclopedia :: Information Genius Encyclopedia sergei Rachmaninov, also Sergey Rachmaninov or sergei rachmaninoff,(April 1, 1873 March 28, 1943) was a Russian composer, pianist and conductor http://www.informationgenius.com/encyclopedia/s/se/sergei_rachmaninov.html
Extractions: Sergei Rachmaninov , also Sergey Rachmaninov or Sergei Rachmaninoff April 1 March 28 ) was a Russian composer pianist and conductor Born in Semyonovo, near Novgorod into a wealthy family with a strong military background, Rachmaninov had his first piano lessons with his mother at the family estate at Oneg. After a decline in their fortunes, the family moved to Saint Petersburg where Rachmaninov studied at the conservatory , before going on to Moscow , where he studied piano with Nikolay Zverev and Alexander Siloti. He also studied harmony with Anton Arensky and counterpoint with Sergei Taneyev. While still a student he wrote this one act opera Aleko , and the set of piano pieces, Op. 3, which contains the Prelude in C sharp minor, probably Rachmaninov's most popular piece for solo piano. Rachmaninov's first symphony was premiered in 1897, but was a complete flop with the critics. Some have suggested that this was as much due to the conducting of Alexander Glazunov , who may have been drunk, as it was to Rachmaninov. The bad reception led to a nervous breakdown and complete loss of self-confidence for Rachmaninov. He wrote very little music until he began a course of therapy with Nikolai Dahl. The result of these sessions was the Piano

Extractions: T hroughout his career as composer, conductor, and pianist, Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was an intensely private individual. When Bertensson and Leyda's 1956 biography appeared, it lifted the veil of secrecy from several areas of Rachmaninoff's life, especially concerning the genesis of his compositions and how their critical reception affected him. The authors consulted many of Rachmaninoff's associates. Given full access to the Rachmaninoff Archive at the Library of Congress, they were tireless in their pursuit of privately held documents, particularly correspondence. David Cannata's new introduction summarizes what has happened in Rachmaninoff scholarship since the book was first published. Sergei Bertensson , who knew Rachmaninoff, published other works on music and film, often with a documentary emphasis.
