Extractions: A pianist of "unerring, warm-toned refinement revealing judicious glimmers of power," [Los Angeles Times] Robert Edward Thies captured worldwide attention in December 1995 when he won the Gold Medal at the Second International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia. With this victory, Thies became the first American pianist to win first prize in a Russian piano competition since Van Cliburn's triumph in the 1958 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Thies's accomplishment brought him commendations from the Los Angeles City Council. Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, California Senator Dianne Feinstein, California Governor Pete Wilson, and President Bill Clinton. In March 2001, under the sponsorship of Community Concerts, Thies completed a three-year affiliation and a forty-city tour of the United States, hi May 1999, Mr. Thies made a much anticipated return to St. Petersburg, where he performed the Hermitage Theater built for Empress Catherine the Great. Upon his return he was selected by a national panel of the American Pianists Association to be among only five pianists to participate in the Fellowship Awards in Indianapolis. Mr. Thies is also a dedicated chamber musician, collaborating with many eminent musicians. He has been a guest artist with the New Hollywood String Quartet and the renowned Blair String Quartet. He has also been fortunate to work with cellists Yo-Yo Ma, Joel Krosnick, David Geringas, Denis Brott, Ron Leonard, Bernard Greenhouse, Cecilia Tsan, violists Tabea Zimmerman and Brian Dembow, and violinists Martin Chalifour; Roger Wilkie, Margaret Batjer, and Andres Cardenes. In 1998 Thies participated in the inaugural festival of Young Artists International. a foundation bringing together six accomplished artists from around the world. These chamber music concerts were broadcast and recorded live onto two compact discs by Telos Records.

Valenti. Born in Brooklyn, New York. He knew that he wanted to be a musician since the age of three. He moved to California and started on trumpet at ten years old in a local Grammar School Music program. Maestro Valenti stayed in music in the local Schools of Los Angeles. During the second World War and after High School, he went into the Navy. Later he was Honorably Discharged from the Navy and attended Westlake College of Music on the GI. Bill of rights. There, he studied with some of the most prestigious instructors. Majoring in Conducting, Harmony, Counterpoint, Solfeggio, Orchestration and on Trumpet, His main instrument. He graduated after two years and won an extra two year scholarship from the Veterans Administration for having superior Grades. Recommended by the Dean of the school who thought that he had an unusual talent. The Dean felt that VALENTI deserved the extended advanced studies with the fine staff at Westlake College. His first term of two years equivalent to a Bachelors Degree, his second term of two years equivalent to a Masters Degree. Jerry McCulley Evocative and reflective of a terrific film As a long-time Chopin enthusiast, I agree with the other reviewer that commented on the fact that these piano pieces are not for wimps. They're difficult, technically complex works that demand a great deal from the pianist. In this instance, I think Wojciech Kilar does a skillful job of interpreting these emotional pieces. Because Wladislaw Szpillman was a Pole (Chopin was half-Polish), it seems only fitting that Chopin's music was the backbone of the movie. Having grown up in Warsaw, Chopin left it in his early 20s for political reasons. Szpillman chose to stay in Warsaw, despite the growing threat of dangers caused by the Nazi regime of World War II.
