Extractions: For more than 20 years, Ivo Pogorelich has enthralled audiences in the greatest concert halls all across the globe. Fans and critics rave about his stunning interpretations of the music, even going so far as to compare his performances to those of the original composers. On October 13, he will offer up his extraordinary talent for your pleasure, filling Jones Hall with the powerful notes of Beethoven, Rachmaninov, Liszt and others. The works of these masters come alive at his fingertips. Enjoy. This charismatic artist/entertainer is known the world over for capturing audiences with his bravado on the ivories. And the music world adores him. Maazel, Tilson Thomas, Dutoit and Eschenbach, the list of conductors Lang Lang has performed with reads like a who's who of today's music giants. The rooms he's played include London's Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie and the Vienna Konzerthaus, just to name a few.

Extractions: We do not mean that only the basketball players of Olimpija that later in Europe confirmed their value for a couple of times, but also 2nd European Championship of young basketball players up to 22 years, played successfully in Tivoli, Postojna and Maribor in July. The final match was won by Belorusija after a victory over Italy. Unfortunately, Slovenian basketball players disappointed a little bit with 8th place. At least Boris Gorenc, who was then a member of Olimpija, won a title of the best player on the championship. In summer, a rich basketball happening in Ljubljana's sports park was rounded up by a visit of Scottie Pippen, a famous star of NBA team Chicago Bulls. Pippen has along with the opening of outdoor court demonstrated slam dunking over a group of volunteers (President of Republic of Slovenia was even amongst them). However, hearts of "slam dunk" admirers were won by Marko Milic several years ago, when he successfully dunked over a car.

Extractions: American Piano Classics Leroy Anderson - Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in C major George Gershwin - Second Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra Louis Moreau Gottschalk - Grand Tarantelle Euday Bowman - 12 th Street Rag Scott Joplin - The Entertainer, Maple Leaf Rag Morton Gould - Interplay (American Concertette for Piano and Orchestra) Stewart Goodyear / William Tritt / Cincinnati Pops Orchestra / Erich Kunzel (Telarc CD 80112) Leroy Anderson is probably most famous for his symphonic lollipops like Sleigh Ride Blue Tango and The Typewriter . In this recording, which features the world premiere recording of his only piano concerto, we are treated to another side of this famous American composer. Ambitious and big-scale, the concerto is brisk, charming and very easy to listen to. The tunes evoke images of the American frontier and the work is generally straightforward. Slow, touching and poignant is the second movement which basks initially in nostalgia and then leads to a more catchy and upbeat rhythm. The last movement is very American and folksy, comfortable and unthreatening. Goodyear, who plays this, is competent but unassuming in his approach. Some might find him a little too reticent and inconspicuous. Nevertheless, this is a worthwhile addition to a collection, especially since it's the only version around. Gershwin's great Second Rhapsody, which has been all but overshadowed by its predecessor, is flawed in parts but curiously satisfying. It is less jazzy than the Rhapsody in Blue but is often more thought-provoking and is more sensuously orchestrated. The melodies are more memorable and there is somehow more ambience, more of that mysterious Gershwin magic. Apparently, Gershwin was quite pleased with the results himself, calling it the best thing he had written in many respects, such as orchestration and form. Again, I find Goodyear a little too recessed although that is probably good for this work.
Miami Piano Festival > Press Releases 2000 Intriguingly, ivo pogorelich, who gave a dismaying performance in But where pogorelichwent on to become selfindulgent, artistically bizarre pianist in history http://www.miamipianofest.com/press/pr2000_02_24_ss.htm
Extractions: As the harmonic center of Freddy Kempf's piano recital Tuesday evening descended - C minor to B minor to -B-flat minor - the volume and interpretive intensity kept rising. By the end of the program, which opened the third annual Miami Festival of Discovery, it was easy to understand why there is considerable buzz about this young artist. Kempf, a Londoner just into his 20's experienced a kind of publicity generating godsend when he failed to win the 1998 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (he placed third), much to the displeasure of the public and press. As compensation, the pianist became an instant star, with recitals and TV appearances galore in Russia. Intriguingly, Ivo Pogorelich, who gave a dismaying performance in West Palm Beach earlier this month, went through something similar when he was eliminated from the 1980 Chopin Competition in Warsaw. But where Pogorelich went on to become possibly the most self-indulgent, artistically bizarre pianist in history, Kempf gives every indication of being a sensible, distinctive musician.
Extractions: Pianist Gekic Makes Unforgettable Debut The other pianists of the younger generation will simply have to move over to make room for Kemal Gekic. The Croatian-born artist, now 38, offered his underheralded and often incendiary San Francisco recital debut Saturday evening at the Herbst Theatre, under the auspices of Four Seasons Concerts; his is a name and talent to remember. The ponytail and casual outfit suggested a contemporary sensibility, but make no mistake: This is a virtuoso of the old school. Like Ivo Pogorelich before him, Gekic earned his reputation by losing, rather than winning, a prestigious competition in his case, two, the Chopin International in Warsaw in 1985 and the Montreal International in 1988. His recordings are still few, though a live Yugoslavian recital on VAI Audio and his contribution to Naxos' continuing Liszt project are worth exploring. Saturday's recital, at which one spotted none of this community's impresarial movers and shakers, impressed to a point. Manner rather than matter was the prevailing aesthetic for the evening, yet it was very much a manner that compels the listener. Range of repertoire did, however, present a problem: Gekic declined to perform any works later than Schumann, and even those were not top-rank.

Extractions: School Links By Mary Ellyn Hutton, Post music writer Pianist Ivo Pogorelich, who vaulted to fame in 1980 by not winning the Warsaw International Chopin Competition, makes his debut with the Cincinnati Symphony at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Music Hall. He will perform Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. Note that this is not the ''Rach 3'' popularized in the David Helfgott film ''Shine,'' but its even more Tchaikovskian sibling. Tall and darkly handsome, with a kind of bad-boy rock-star image, Pogorelich, 40, polarizes listeners with his idiosyncratic interpretations. Where some have found ''perversity,'' others have found ''magic.'' Famed pianist Martha Argerich, a judge at the Warsaw Competition, resigned in protest after he was eliminated in the final round. One of the best-selling classical recording artists, the Yugoslav-born Pogorelich is also deeply involved in humanitarian causes, many on behalf of his native country (a native of Belgrade, he is half Serb, half Croat). He is the only classical artist ever to have been named an Ambassador of Good Will by UNESCO. Also on the program, to be conducted by music director Jesus Lopez-Cobos, is the Symphony No. 3 by Edward Elgar, as completed by British composer/musicologist Anthony Payne. Left unfinished at Elgar's death, the passionate late-romantic symphony was premiered in London in 1998.
