The disc, on Hyperion Records, features the rarely heard concertos of Polish/US emigré Sigismund Stojowski. It was hailed as " A great musical event of world-wide proportions" and named 'Record of the Month' in the Polish national music monthly Muzyka 21 . Described as "A simply tremendous release... a truly great recording, an award-winner" by International Record Review magazine, in BBC Music Magazine "Stojowski could hardly have found a better interpreter than Jonathan Plowright" , while Gramophone magazine wrote "his performances are a rare example of technical and musical integrity". Gold Medallist at the Royal Academy of Music, 'Commonwealth Musician of the Year', and a Fulbright Scholar, Jonathan also won the European Piano Competition. Critics, colleagues and audiences alike have had nothing but praise for his many national and international performances and he has been in demand all over the world as recitalist, appeared with many leading orchestras and ensembles and given numerous radio broadcasts. Besides his busy performing schedule Jonathan is often invited to give masterclasses, consultation lessons and prize adjudications at international conservatoires.

On his nice homepage you can hear many more sound clips, find the voices of the press, and view Jonathan's concerto repertoire. I admire this man, who doesn't just take advantage of his talent to delight audiences with his varied musical interpretations, but also gives master classes to help many other musicians understand the boundless wonderland of professional pianistic development. Being a concert pianist alone takes a special sense of perfectionism that can only be achieved and maintained through constant practice. I never had that persistance myself, so I settled for branching out into many other musical fields, which brought me good success, but I will always look in amazement upon that special breed that is called a concert pianist.

The Romantic Piano Concerto, Vol 28 - Stojowski He was both virtuoso pianist and serious composer (he wrote a symphony and violinconcerto as well as We are delighted to welcome jonathan plowright to Hyperion http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/details/67314.asp
Extractions: Now these really are romantic piano concertos! Stojowski was born and brought up in Poland though he later lived in Paris and finally became an American citizen. He was both virtuoso pianist and serious composer (he wrote a symphony and violin concerto as well as music for his own instrument) and his initial career was full of promise. Unfortunately for his later reputation his style was that of a previous generation and in the 20th century his music was viewed as increasingly dated. One hundred years later this hardly matters and on this CD we find works steeped in the language of Tchaikovsky and Grieg, perhaps with a hint of Saint-Saëns and the almost sentimental lyricism of Paderewski (ten years Stojowski's senior, Paderewski was both teacher and friend to the younger composer, the second concerto was dedicated to, and played by him). We are delighted to welcome Jonathan Plowright to Hyperion. He valiantly tackles the huge virtuoso demands Stojowski makes of the soloist, particularly in the first concerto. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra are playing better than ever and they are kept fully occupied in the rich and colourful scoring of both works. Recorded in Caird Hall, Dundee, on 6 7 June 2001

The Lecture will be preceded by the opening of a Paderewski Exhibition, featuring scores, manuscripts, and documents from the collection of the Polish Music Center, including Paderewski's piano rolls, photographs, letters, as well as concert programs of his tours in the 1920s, and numerous publications of his music (recordings and early editions). The Exhibition is prepared by Maja Trochimczyk (content) and Ljiljana Grubisic (presentation); it includes material in 18 display cabinets. Ignacy Jan Paderewski, portrait by Styka, 1916. The selection of Paderewski as the patron of the lectures held at USC highlights both his role in California and his connection to this esteemed University. This eminent composer-statesman received an honorary doctorate from USC in 1923 (from the School of International Relations). During that event held at Bovard Auditorium, Paderewski made a speech, but did not perform; a music program was presented by an international array of artists. Participants in this celebration included USC deans and professors, representatives of Polish-American Community; musicians and a patriotic organization called the Native Sons of the Golden West. The audience consisted of USC faculty members and students, diplomatic corps from L.A. area; journalists and the general public. The same groups of listeners are expected at the 2002 Annual Paderewski Lecture featuring Zygmunt Krauze accompanied by members of the Los-Angeles-based Polish Folk Dance Ensemble Krakusy.

Extractions: Blackheath Halls, London SE3, 20 -24 October 1999 The second pianoworks festival at Blackheath Halls has established this annual event as unique, and as one of the most worthwhile international piano festivals, well worth the attention of visitors from Europe (City Airport is only a quarter of an hour away!). It is masterminded by Stephen Coombs, a quiet man and undemonstrative but brilliant pianist, who recruited this year an impressive array of master pianists, several of them regular recording artists for Hyperion. They included two Leeds first prizewinners. All the concerts were shared, and there were no solo recitals. This scheme provided socialising for the artists, which they very evidently relished, and for listeners the special enlightenment which resulted from the unusual opportunity to hear different players in immediate succession on the same Steinway. The pianists also took their turns in duet and duo piano, in chamber music with instrumental ensembles and in concertos with orchestra, and there were public masterclasses for advanced conservatory students, a quiz, a silent film with improvised piano accompaniment, a demonstration of recording studio procedures and Brian Kay's Sunday Morning (the entire festival was recorded for BBC Radio 3, and there will be a week of broadcasts early next year). A feast indeed!
