The Diabelli Variations This opus, that Alfred Brendel has described as, "The greatest of all piano works," might justifiably be considered an afterthought of Beethoven's. According to most accounts, in 1819 Anton Diabelli, a composer and prominent music publisher, sent a copy of a waltz theme he had just written to 50 composers, requesting that each of them write one variation on the theme for a composite set. He intended to publish this set and to use the profits from sales to benefit orphans and widows of the Napoleonic Wars, but he probably also wanted to promote his new publishing firm. Beethoven was one of the recipients of the theme, but he is said to have refused to participate in the project, referring to the waltz as a "cobbler's patch," or, by some accounts, "trash." The composite set was indeed published, but without a contribution from Beethoven. Nevertheless, the theme must have eventually grabbed his attention, because by 1820, in a letter to one Peter Joseph Simrock, of the Bonn publishing house, Beethoven refers to his work on the variations as, "grand variations on a German waltz." Martin Cooper, in his book entitled

Her recent recording "Portrait of the Viola" with Robert McDonald - piano [ASV CD DCA1130] has been met with the highest of critical acclaim. Gramophone Magazine described it as a "superbly stylish recording, always with flexibility and poetry in abundance. No other recording surpasses this newcomer in terms of sweep or communicative ardor" and Strings magazine described Ms. Callus as a "violist of the highest caliber; with a performance that is beautifully interpreted with somnolent abandon". A native of England, Ms. Callus graduated with Honors from The Royal Academy of Music and recently was bestowed an honorary ARAM (Associate of the Royal Academy of Music) for her achievements in the field. She then continued her studies with renowned Scottish violist Paul Coletti at The Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and shortly afterwards, became his teaching assistant at the school. During this time, Ms Callus was the winner of several important competitions including a special prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition and Congress.

Utah Music Festival - Peter Vinograde Reviews Erich Itor Kahn s Chaconne in Time of War (1943) was very moving and expertlyplayed by pianist peter vinograde (1999 Bard Schoenberg Festival) Le http://www.utahmusic.org/bio/peter_v_reviews.htm
Extractions: Peter Vinograde - Reviews "It would be hard to imagine anyone nodding off during Vinograde's incendiary performances. It's not simply that the clarity of the textures, the focus of his gestures, and the searing precision of his articulation give every measure a distinctive profile. Beyond that, the punch of his rhythms (try the staggering toccata sections of the Zuckerman or the more extreme moments in the Copland Piano Fantasy) gives the music, even at itsthickest, a rugged sense of linear progress, and his imposing left hand gives the pulverizing sense of culmination. The results can be almost harrowing in their concentrated intensity, but they inevitably sweep you along. In sum, this is astounding pianism." Rabinowitz, Fanfare, 10/01 " Vinograde's more muscular, more incisive, and (when called for) faster playing makes for more excitement and strength and imparts more monumentality to the work. I find it thrilling, especially in Phoenix's spacious, high-impact sonics" (comparison of Copland Fantasy recordings). Lehman, American Record Guide, 10/01

Though the name of Copland is one that will appear if you ask any average group of music lovers for a quick list of American composers he features here in unfamiliar guise. As for Creston he is no household name and Mark Zuckerman is a complete unknown. Elements of atonality skim through or propel most of this music. Let's take the Copland Fantasy first. This is one unbroken span of almost half an hour's duration. While fantasy form allows the composer more scope than strict sonata it is still an uphill task to sustain interest over such a reach. Copland's language is dodecaphonic - a road he set down first with his Piano Quartet (1950). Why such a step-change? Copland seems rather to have been driven into this line by his terror of repeating himself. When Schuman asked in 1951 for a major work for the Juilliard's 50th celebrations Copland set to with this work. A collegiate inspiration was the pianism of William Kapell and the two impetuses flowed together. In 1953 Kapell was killed in an air crash and the Fantasy is dedicated to his memory. This is a work of sharp and stony focus. Icy shudders and baritonal impact dominate. Jazzy convulsions and flooding collisions of glissandi steel and swagger their way across this uncompromising and unmisty landscape. As the notes say, this is no
