Extractions: Now, Today's America Makes Perfect Sense: The Original Draft of The Bill of Rights Tonight, the Virtuoso Series will close the curtains on an exciting 2003-2004 season with guest pianist Jon Kimura Parker. In addition to winning several awards and competitions (including the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1984), Parker performed with some of the best symphony orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, London Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra. Most classical pianists spend their time playing the classics with or without the orchestra or chamber group.
The Salt Lake Tribune -- A Keyboard Wizard that box a little. Stepping outside the box * pianist jon kimura parker performsThursday at 730 pm in Libby Gardner Concert Hall at the University of Utah. http://www.sltrib.com/2004/Mar/03282004/arts/151560.asp
Extractions: "If it's April Fool's, the joke's on me; it's a hard program," Parker said in an interview from his home in Houston, where he is on the Rice University faculty in addition to his active schedule as a performer and artistic adviser to the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival (run by his wife, violinist Aloysia Friedmann).
Extractions: The occasion was the concluding concert of this season's Virtuoso Series at Libby Gardner Hall in Salt Lake City. Parker started each half of the concert with a Mozart Fantasy in C minor (K. 475) for the opener and D minor (K. 397) after the break. Like everything Parker put his talented hands to, these were well-played, with the interpretation of the D Minor Fantasy being especially theatrical and interesting. The transcription of "Rite of Spring" that filled the remainder of the first half is Parker's own, culled from Stravinsky's duet version, the orchestral score and other sources. The arrangement captures to a surprising degree the raw power of the original, and Parker played its finger-busting complexities like a demon fleeing hell.

Extractions: The relationship between music and the human brain represents a special focus of research at The Neurosciences Institute. Although innovative and unique, our work in understanding those brain functions that enable us to create and appreciate music is only in its infancy. We believe that the quality of human life can be substantially enhanced by furthering research about how the brain conceives and perceives music and art. In keeping with our commitment to research in this important arena, the Institute's Auditorium is made available without charge to many distinguished arts and educational organizations for concerts and educational presentations. And in 2000, for the first time, the Institute staged a series of four chamber music concerts, featuring internationally recognized young artists from Europe and the United States. Cultural events held in the auditorium are presented under the aegis of "Performing Arts at The Neurosciences Institute." This program represents a service to the local community that is designed both to encourage and support the performing arts, and to underscore the special relationship between the arts and the human brain. Noted acoustician Cyril Harris, who oversaw the design of the new Seattle Symphony Hall, worked with New York City-based architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien to create the Institute's 352-seat auditorium, which is generally considered to be one of the most acoustically ideal small performance halls in the nation. The auditorium has an original system of angular, sound dispersing panels covering its walls and ceiling. A pyramidal design diffuses sound to create a uniform acoustical environment. Artists and audiences agree that the same sound is heard in every seat.
