Event in The Tech Performing Arts Series. Jordan Hall, May 12. By JONATHAN RICHMOND I T WAS NOT ARAM GHARABEKIAN'S happiest evening. One-third of the professional freelancers who normally make up SinfoNova's orchestral ensemble had decided they would rather play for the Boston Pops or the Boston Ballet on the night of SinfoNova's last 1988/89 season concert. The musicians Gharabekian recruited to replace them were of a lower standard. Then, solo pianist Soomi Lee due to open the concert in a performance of Ernest Bloch's Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra with Piano Obligato was nowhere to be seen at 8 pm. Because of a misunderstanding, she was under the impression that she was to close the concert, not open it. A desperate Gharabekian finally found her at 8:20, and she was changed and on stage two minutes later. Perhaps all of this proved to be too much for Gharabekian's nerves, for the craziest event of the evening occurred during the

Extractions: CLASSICAL The Pittsburgh Symphony Brass offers a unique blend of virtuosity with brilliant sonority, marked by beautiful tone qualities, impeccable intonation, and polished execution. The ensemble endeavors to stretch the limitations of performance and explore a wide range of musical expression rarely achieved in brass music. "Whether its Mahler 5th or We Wish You A Merry Christmas, these players are white hot, the best on compact disc." - Jim Cunningham, WQED-FM, Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Symphony Brass and Four Winds Entertainment are proud to present "The Spirit of Christmas." This splendid new recording features wonderful Christmas favorites arranged in magnificent settings that capture the joy and good cheer of the holidays, played as only Pittsburgh Symphony Brass can. Like their successful first holiday recording "A Christmas Concert," the new album offers popular carols in short festive arrangements for brass, but also adds to the program songs arranged for brass, organ, tympani, and voice. Sure to be a favorite is a very special new Christmas song "Take Me To Christmas Past," written by Marvin Hamlisch and sung by the talented young mezzo-soprano Tami Fire. Led by Grammy Award winner George Vosburgh and produced by the renowned Arnie Roth, Pittsburgh Symphony Brass performs on "The Spirit of Christmas" with the bold, virtuoso flair for which they have become so popular.

(He certainly had enough opportunities to influence the production, since, besides playing the lead, Falcon pitched in as cowriter, coproducer, production designer, and costume designer on the film.) Despite the limited budget, the movie is generally entertaining, though it could probably stand to lose a couple of go-nowhere subplots that account for about 15 minutes of the 91-minute running time. Randy Silver Average review score: So disappointed This movie was possibly the biggest letdown of my life. I heard from a friend that this was a film I would truly enjoy. We were both big Bill and Ted fans and when he told me the plot of the movie I was nothing less than stunned. It sounded brilliant. Russians takeover the US and ninja guitar players duke it out to see who will be king of Lost Vegas (sic). I understand that some pseudo-intellectual film junkie would find this to be moronic, but for the majority of fun-loving filmgoers, this flick sounds brilliant.
