Extractions: Denver Post, 19 November 1997 Despite the Three Tenors and the emergence of a bevy of fine mezzo-sopranos, we certainly do not live in a Golden Age of singing. More accurately, we're in the midst of a plastic-coated aluminum age of the Golden Reissue. There's never been a time when more dead singers and musicians could be heard in your living room. Why is it happening? CDs are cheap to produce, but living artists require fees and royalties. Dead ones don't, and their arias and sonatas sit in the archives awaiting resurrection. So every major label is turning to reissues, from Deutsche Grammophon's complete 87-disc Beethoven Edition to Pearl's 12-CD Covent Garden on Record and RCA's 65-album Heifetz Collection. In most cases, reissues involve the digital remastering of 78 rpm recordings dating back as far as 1900 with tin-pan sonics and scratchy surface noise.

Extractions: Nate Randall in Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall (Photo by Denise Applewhite) Concerts are like big dinner partiesexcept 800 people are coming," says Uni versity Concert Manager Nathan Randall. "Putting together an audience and performance is like orchestrating a successful banquet." As a one-time professional chef, Randall should know. But with more than 200 events a year to schedule in Alexander and Taplin auditoriums, he scarcely has time to crack a cookbook these days. Out of a white-siding building tucked behind a service station on Alexander Street, he manages the Friends of Music at Princeton and Princeton University Concerts, as well as parceling out space to other groupsfrom on campus and off, and not always musical. Randall just completed arrangements for the 2000-'01 concert season, and he and the program committee have already begun work on engaging artists for 2001-'02. When he started doing the job in 1988, there were 10 University concerts and "about 15 Friends of Music concerts," Randall recalls. Since then, "the University Concerts has added jazz and world music to its formerly all-classical mix, as well as the Richardson Chamber Players, for some 16 programs a year. And with the inauguration of the Music Department's Certificate Program in Musical Performance, the number of Friends concerts has grown to more than 50."

These prophetic words were uttered by the legendary early 20th century teacher, Theodor Leschetizky, to his young student, Artur Schnabel. "In later years, Schnabel took special delight in repeating Leschetizky's prophecy as a paradox, because he himself could never make any distinction between pianist and musician, even for his pupils. And, in his own case, the musician and the pianist were completely fused - though the pianist remained always the servant of the musician."*

Extractions: 1. Who was Paderewski? November 6th marks the anniversary of the birth of the most famous and popular pianist of all times - Ignacy Jan PADEREWSKI (1860-1941). Although discouraged by his teachers from becoming a pianist, he launched his artistic career in 1885 and literally swept the world with his playing and his dynamic personality. In 1932 American president Franklin Delano Roosevelt called him a Modern Immortal and two years later in a book written by author Charles Phillips, The Story of a Modern Immortal, the introduction began as follows, "It is difficult to write of Paderewski without emotion. Statesman, orator, pianist and composer, he is a superlative man, and his genius transcends that of anyone I have ever known. Those of us who love Poland are glad that she can claim him as a son, but let her always remember that Ignace Jan Paderewski belongs to all mankind." Yes, here was a personality that was not one in a million, but perhaps one in a century; an "artist of such a distinctly pronounced individuality as to be an exceedingly rare occurence -indeed - phenomenal." Paderewski was a genius, an intellectual, a "statesman par excellence;" a beautiful orator in a language that was not his; a linguist who spoke no less than seven languages fluently; a great musician; a patriot; and most of all, a humanitarian who was so generous that every act of kindness to him was always returned manifold.
Extractions: DDD "This is another superb disc in Nimbus' Grand Piano series, compiled with breathtaking skill from piano-rolls. The central item is Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. I heard this artist play the work at the Royal Albert Hall in those palmy days when pianists were not ashamed to be personalities with something personal to say. Sometimes the results were idiosyncratic, but on this disc the performances have fidelity, tonal glory and just that touch of individuality which should always mark a true musician. Above all, the playing has unremitting grandeur. This is big treatment of a programme that shows the great man at his best ... this is a golden record of a golden age. Buy it all costs."
