Virtuoso pianist and composer, he studied in Europe and toured throughout the world. This disc contains eight of Gottschalk's piano works, all of which are quite engaging, very diverse, and showcase Gottschalk's versatility in using musical influences from many different cultures. The instrument Lambert Orkis plays on this recording, an 1865 Chickering grand piano which is part of the instrument collection at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, is the type of piano that Gottschalk used for his performances. These works were recorded in the historic Coolidge Auditorium of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC. "...wow, what a CD! It's the greatest entertainment piano show of the year."

Extractions: -A.D. Amorosi April 11-17, 2002 music Need an excuse to get off your ass and attend the recital by pianist Lambert Orkis on Sunday night? Take your pick. One: Best known as Anne-Sophie Mutter's longtime collaborator and accompanist, Orkis is a musician of the highest caliber. It would be wrong to pass up the chance to hear someone with his abilities perform in such an intimate setting. Two: While Philadelphia isn't exactly known as a hotbed for contemporary music, James Primosch (b. 1956) the director of the Presser Electronic Music Studio at Penn is uniquely positioned to change all that. The program includes the world premiere of his Sonata Fantasia , which incorporates a synthesizer along with a piano. Three: The concert will also feature the world premiere of the Piano Sonata No. 2

Extractions: JOSHUA KOSMAN, Chronicle Music Critic Anyone in doubt about the importance of pure smarts for a musician would have found the point eloquently made at Tuesday's superb Davies Hall recital by violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, presented by San Francisco Performances. I call it Mutter's recital, because her name gets printed in big letters and sells the tickets. But one of the evening's many delights was the level of equal and intimate partnership on display by the violinist and her longtime colleague, pianist Lambert Orkis. Between them, these performers offered as cogent and enlightening a program as anyone has witnessed here in a long while. Not all the repertoire was top-notch, but the musicianship was. Mutter is easily among the most important young violinists of our day. Yet the interesting thing is that the mechanics of her playing can sometimes amount to little more than what is required to get her ideas across. Her left-hand technique is solid but rarely flashy (though her bowing arm is phenomenally strong and supple). Her string tone is attractive enough without being specially plush, and intonation is far from the strongest part of her game.

The composer leads Symphony II in an impassioned reading. Wernicks Violin Concerto is given a heroic performance by soloist Gregory Fulkerson, and Symphony II, led by music director, Larry Rachleff. Wernicks virtuoso orchestral accompaniment is played with great intensity by Symphony II- otherwise known as the Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra, and is captured in hair-raising sonics!
