Chitose Okashiro is a regular of mainstay classical stations WQXR, WNYC and WBAI New York, KDFC and KUSF San Francisco, KKGO and KUSC Los Angeles, KING Seattle, KOPB Portland, WFMT, WHPK and WNIB Chicago and NHK FM Japan. Featured on Tokyo Metropolitan TV and NHK Satellite TV during broadcasts of recitals and concerto performances throughout Japan, the constant exposure helped establish a strong media presence for her international career. Miss Okashiro records exclusively for the Pro Piano Records label. Her sixth release is an exciting all Wagner Piano Transcription recording. Immediately prior was her critically acclaimed all Scriabin CD featuring the world premiere recording of "The Poem of Ecstasy". This was a two piano version transcribed by Conus-Okashiro. It used an "over dub multi-track recording technique" allowing Miss Okashiro to play both piano parts (something never before attempted), to achieve a more colorful piano sound throughout the entirety of the instrument's vast harmonic register.

Playing the transcriptions of Kocsis ("Einleitung" from Tristan and Islode ), Moszkowski ("Isoldens Tad" from Tristan ... and "Der Venusberg" from Tannhauser ) and Brassin ("Der Ritt der Walkuren," "Feuerzauber" and "Sigmunds Liebesgesang" from Der Ring des Nibelungen ), Ms. Okashiro infuses these pieces with all the passion and expression that Wagner must have had in mind when he wrote them. Despite the fact that this recording is of solo piano, one can almost close one's eyes and see the action on the stage. Ms. Okashiro uses all of the piano's expressiveness, power and delicacy to bring these pieces to life. For example, "Isoldens Tod" ("Isolde's Death") may very well be one of, if not the, most well-known pieces in the Wagnerian opus. Ms. Okashiro's playing of the Moskowski transcription neither eviscerates the piece nor over-embellishes it. Its obvious that she understands the work completely. But her familiarity with Wagner is only one of this disc's qualities that commands our attention. The other is the sound. Nonetheless, both musically and sonically, this is a disc that can hold its own in the exalted company of original recordings of full orchestral versions of the pieces. Pro Piano and Chitose Okashiro have created a winner here.

She is active not only as a recording and performing pianist, but also as a superlative record producer. Her focus as a producer is to recognize a performer's musical personality with care and sensitivity, then to find a way of capturing and reproducing that personality as faithfully and passionately as possible. Such stimulating experience lends her as an introspective opportunity to examine herself, the pianist, through the eyes of her own self, the producer. Thereby her various activities nourish themselves from the musical intellect which resides within her, doing their part to help her grow as a more complete and well-rounded artist.

Their CD logo gives two possible meanings to their PPR logo: Pro Piano Records is obvious, but in small print next to their name is Pianist's Perspective Recording . It is this standard which makes this label so attractive to the lover of audiophile classical piano music. After listening to 15 of their CDs, I can say that a fair and accurate assessment of CDs is simple: excellent performance and sound. These recordings sparkle because of the musicians and because of the care with which Pro Piano records masters and manufactures them. My first taste of this label was the Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 6 "Pathétique" piano transcription by Walter Niemann performed by Chitose Okashiro reviewed separately on this site and can be seen by clicking here [Pro Piano Records PPR224530]. Extractions: www.propiano.com T ranscribing music composed for other instruments or for ensembles of instruments for the piano has been around for a long time. One of the most famous transcribers, Johann Sebastian Bach, transcribed a number of concerti by Vivaldi for organ as well as the works of others and his own from one instrument or ensemble to another. This kind of borrowing and rewriting maintained some popularity for the next few centuries after Bach. In the late 19 th and the early 20 th century, transcriptions for piano became very popular. This period, a golden age of pianism, established the piano as a kind of precursor to the phonograph. Having a piano in the parlor was almost a necessity for admission to the genteel middle class. It was also a way of bringing culture into the home. For good reason, too was the piano the instrument of choice. The piano had huge advantages over other instruments. Only one instrument allowed a performer to cover most of the notes any orchestra could play. It also lent itself to reasonable sound no matter how much of a neophyte the pianist might be. With improvements to the action, it became capable of the very loud sound we know today, so that it also became a fixture in schools, town halls, taverns and church halls. During this period, there were many accomplished pianists. As a result, transcribing great symphonic works for piano became a way of spreading symphonic music throughout the pre-phonograph world without the expense of a full orchestra. Many of these transcriptions are still being played. One example is particularly famous: Liszt's transcription of Beethoven's ninth symphony, which is still performed. Now, a new generation of piano virtuosi, such as Stephen Hough, Arcadi Volodos and Marc-André Hamelin have dug through the archives and resurrected a number of great transcriptions by such composers as Busoni and Rachmaninoff. Hamelin, Volodos and others are also creating their own brilliant transcriptions.
