Nakamatsu is a rising young musician who, in 1997, was named gold medalist of the 10th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the first American to earn that distinction since 1981. A former high school German teacher from Sunnyvale, Calif., with no formal conservatory background, Nakamatsu stunned the music world with his accomplishment. He became an overnight popular hero and later that summer performed with Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Boston Pops, and the Montpellier Festival in France. During the past two years, Nakamatsu has had engagements with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New World Symphony, the Philharmonie der Nationen, and the symphony orchestras of Dallas, Detroit, Fort Worth, Honolulu, Milwaukee, San Francisco, Seattle and Utah.

Along with the personal narrative, the Feb. 23 audience enjoyed several moving and beautifully executed piano selections and the one piece that projected Nakamatsu into piano lessons and his career. When Nakamatsu was 4 years old, his mother took him to day care where the teacher showed the youngsters how the piano worked, but at the same time admonished them that it was off limits to them. But the 4 year old knew that despite the teacher's admonition, he had to taste of the forbidden fruit. Once he did, his career was launched. His parents bought him a little two-tier organ, which he played constantly from age 4 to 6, when his parents began to look for and soon found a music teacher suitable for his obvious and emerging talent.

This unassuming budding pianist, whose talent was little known, has brought pride to the area that nurtured him. Jon's switch from low to high key came after years of patient perseverence. Piano competitions were played under enormous odds, as he vied against pupils who had studied with famous teachers in renowned conservatories. Since he began piano lessons as young boy, Jon has been under the tutelage of Marina Derryberry, who is still his mentor. An early note of recognition was played by music critic Paul Hertelendy (San Jose Mercuiy News) who wrote glowingly about him in 1995 after Jon won the Chopin Piano Competition in Miami, Fla. That win resulted in piano recitals at New York Lincoln Center and Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The recent Van Cliburn International Piano Competition win assures Jon of many concert appearances in the United States and, undoubtedly, Europe.

Even his piano teacher, Marina Derryberry, was surprised when Jon Nakamatsu earned the Gold Medal at the 10th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition earlier this year in Fort Worth, Texas. And Derryberry has been instructing Nakamatsu since he was six years old. Nakamatsu and NBC-TV's "Today" News Anchor Ann Curry will become the first recipients of the Japanese American National Museum's Awards for Excellence when they will be honored at the institution's Annual Dinner on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Century Plaza Hotel. The dinner's theme is "Building New Traditions: Recognizing Japanese American Excellence". The Museum will also present its Corporate Leadership Awards to Mikasa and Kenwood and will give special recognition to the late Noby Yamakoshi, a Museum Trustee. Besides being honored, Nakamatsu will perform at the dinner. Now 29, Jon became only the third American in 36 years to earn the Van Cliburn gold medal and the first in 16 years. More dramatically, Nakamatsu was the only entrant in the competition to not study at a music conservatory or even major in music in college. Nakamatsu majored in German studies at Stanford and earned his masters degree in education. For the past six years, he has earned his living as a German teacher at St. Francis High School in Mountain View, California. Unlike most of his competitors, Jon has had just two piano teachers in his life: Derryberry since 1974 and Karl Ulrich Schnabel since 1977.
