Marcia Davenport wrote a novel about the Collyears, My Brother's Keeper . The brothers also inspired Richard Greenberg to write The Dazzle. In the world premiere of his play Clutter Mark Saltzman reveals his slant in the first scene when two policemen, Sgt. Reilly Dolan and his brother Patrolman Kevin Dolan, find Homer Collyer's body among mountains of rubble in the Collyers' upper Fifth Avenue home. When Kevin asks his brother, "Why were they like that?" Reilly replies, "Why is anyone like that?" Saltzman attempts to find his way through the accumulated clutter of the lives of the Collyer brothers by scrutinizing the relationship of the Dolan brothers. Kevin, a POW in a Japanese prison camp during World War II, is high strung and easily distraught, especially during forays to the Collyer Brothers house. Reilly, sidelined from the War by an old injury, is very much in command. He's gotten Kevin a job and now urges him to find a girlfriend. Their scenes are included in the ongoing investigation into the death of Homer Collyer, who was found in his mansion after a mysterious phone tip. Brother Langley is missing and is the prime suspect.

Created and written by Robert Cenedella, Somerset's original title was "Another WorldSomerset" and had much in common with the parent program: the same opening title, the same theme music, and the same announcer (Bill Woolf). When an Allied arms drop is signalled he is in charge of its reception. Arriving at the dropping zone he meets a group of Italians led by his second in command, an Italian officer, who takes him aside and says that there is a man too many in the group - a man unknown to anyone. The British officer interrogates the man - he is in his late teens - who is unable to explain his presence. It would be impossible to keep a prisoner secure. The drop is imminent. The British officer consults with his Italian colleague who says: You are in command here. The British officer says the man has to be got rid of. He is duly shot. For his new album, Mark went straight to the Heart of Chicago to pay tribute to his roots and record an album of straight-ahead Chicago blues. Mark called on long time friends from the Windy City to assemble an all-star cast of Chicago Blues veterans. Former Muddy Waters sidemen - drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and bassist Bob Stroger - combine with pianist Barrelhouse Chuck, and guitarists Billy Flynn, Dave Myers (the last surviving member of Little Walter’s Band), and producer/guitarist Steve Freund to create a rock-solid foundation for Mark’s singing and harp playing. Heart of Chicago draws its influences from the blues of Chicago, but it creates a new sound with the additional element of Mark’s West Coast blues. "My Kind of Baby" and the instrumental "Rockin’ at the Riverside", recall Little Walter’s best numbers with a rocking, darting amplified harmonica solo played over Billy Flynn’s and Dave Myers’ intricate guitar backing. The harmonica and guitar interplay on "Rollin’ From Side to Side" captures the classic sound of Muddy Waters’ numbers with Little Walter and James Cotton. Billy Flynn’s biting slide guitar over Barrelhouse Chuck’s rollicking piano fills - recalling Sunnyland Slim’s signature sound - and the lazy rhythmic groove laid down by Muddy’s former rhythm section, creates the perfect showcase for Mark’s tasteful vocals and deep harmonica sound.

Extractions: 2003 The Blacklisted Journalist) WHEN HARRY MET ALLEN [The following was written as liner notes for the Locust Music re-issue of New York Blues, recorded by Harry Smith and produced by Ann Charters.] Were prophecies evoked when The Fugs sang, Village Voice nothing, New Yorker nothing, Sing Out and Folkways nothing, Harry Smith and Allen Ginsberg, nothing, nothing, nothing? The song Nothing was included on The Fugs' First Album , produced by Harry Smith in 1965, almost a decade before Ginsberg and Smith combined their own talents for an impromptu (or was it planned?) recording session at the Chelsea Hotel. So then, might New York Blues be a representation of the existential nothing? Or is it really something? Allen Ginsberg met Harry Smith in 1959 at The Five Spot in New York City, where jazz pianist Thelonious Monk was enjoying one of his famous residencies. Ginsberg had only heard about Smith, but recognized him immediately. Smith was sitting at a table transcribing Monks eccentric melodies into impressionistic drawings. Allen would later describe that first vision of Smith in these terms, slightly hunchback, short, magical-looking, in a funny way gnomish or dwarfish, same time dignified. A chance meeting then? Not necessarily, considering the synchronistic Weltanschauung when it comes to all things Harry Smith. And just how much empyrean nonsense is it to infer that these two opposites did indeed attract? Surely the two men couldnt have come from more contrasting orientations. One, a hermetic, neo-celibate whitebread record collector/visual artist from Oregon with roots in freemasonry and an attraction to occultisms. The other, a free-loving Buddhist Jew queer from Jersey who became reigning ambassador of the beat generation and a poet of Whitmanesque proportions.
