Extractions: El Manisero Del Ritmo: Bobby Ramirez For many years, musician Bobby Ramirez has carefully crafted his artistic talent to mirror a colorful palate of distinct musical textures weaving effortlessly through a kaleidoscope of music and rhythms. While his musical roots stem from his birthplace Santa Clara, Cuba, having grown up in the United States (Miami, Florida) has enabled Bobby's talents to blossom within a grand multicultural environment. His style of playing is equally rooted in Afro-Cuban rhythm, also reflecting a tremendous diversity of Latin music and American Jazz; thus, becoming one of Florida's most prominent and influential Latin musicians in modern times. When it comes to Latin Jazz, Ramirez has maintained an unwavering vision and commitment to performing this music expanding its frontiers beyond his hometown of Miami to include most major cities throughout Florida. A true pioneer of the Latin Jazz sound in Florida since the late 70's, Ramirez was one of the first musicians to perform Latin Jazz North of Hollywood back when there were few Hispanics living in Broward. Since then, Ramirez has taken his Latin Jazz sound to other notable cities like Jacksonville, Naples, Orlando, Tampa, Sarasota, Ft. Myers, Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach and others. At age 14, he began learning how to play the saxophone at Brownsville Jr. High School. He then took an interest in playing the flute, guitar, as well as arranging and composing. At age 16, while attending Filler Jr. High School he wrote his first full big band arrangement for an 18-piece orchestra. Ramirez also attended Miami Springs Sr. High where he was a featured soloist as well as leading various small Jazz combos and big Band ensemble at rehearsals and concerts. From there he continued his studies at Miami-Dade Community College, Florida International University, as well as individual private music sessions in a variety of styles from Jazz to classical music. Since the late 1970's, Ramirez has performed in many music festivals for all kinds of audiences from around the world.

Extractions: December 31, 1999 - Israel Myers, the originator of the London Fog raincoat, died on Sunday at the North Oaks retirement community in Pikesville, Md. He was 93. After making raincoats for the Army in World War II, Mr. Myers's Londontown Manufacturing Company was the first to popularize the military trench coat for civilian wear. The design and pioneering use of polyester blends helped Londontown become the dominant maker of men's coats in the United States in the 1960's and 70's. Mr. Myers, the son of a tailor, was born in Lynchburg, Va., but moved as a boy to Baltimore. He became a statewide champion in shorthand while attending Baltimore City College. Just before graduating at 17, Mr. Myers was hired as a stenographer with the Makover, Roten Company, a maker of naval officers clothing. Mr. Myers worked for that company, with increasingly more responsible jobs, while earning a law degree at the University of Maryland at night. By 1927, the company changed its name to Londontown Clothes and began to focus on expensive men's suits and coats. The company collapsed during the Depression, and Mr. Myers obtained the rights to the Londontown name by agreeing to help the creditors liquidate its assets.

Extractions: The Eighth Annual Vision Festival by Frank Rubolino The Vision Festival's eighth annual extravaganza of creative music, dance, poetry, and visual art was an emotional event on several fronts. The festival paid tribute to the late vocalist Jeanne Lee with several programs reflecting her impact on the artistic community. This festival also was noteworthy for providing a platform for the reemergence of bassist Henry Grimes, whose inspired execution belied the decades of inactivity self-imposed on the pioneering musician. The six-night, 28-performance 'Avant Jazz for Peace' celebration was a feast for all the senses as well as nourishment for the soul enriched through the gifted contributions of so many veteran performers. CD Review: "Rack 'Em Up" Marc Wilson, bassist Mike Judge, and pianist Matt McCabe horn section (Grady Gainesand mark Kazanoff on on trumpet) swingingly backs myers impassioned vocal http://www.trageser.com/archive/music/album-funderburgh-rackem.html
Extractions: This review first appeared in the May/June 1990 issue of Living Blues magazine. T If Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan can be dismissed as whites playing rock music that is derivative of blues (although Muddy Waters said just the opposite of Winter), the same cannot be said of Funderburgh. Nor can it fairly be argued that he remains a second-rate bluesman. On "Rack 'Em Up," we get more of the same winning Myers-Funderburgh formula: Myers' rich vocals and harp set against Funderburgh's scintillating guitar work. Myers' vocals are smooth, but with a sparkling vitality and energy that makes full use of his range. The instrumental title track shows Myers' harp playing to be just as warm as his singing. Myers and Funderburgh trade leads and solos, and the musical empathy between the two men is readily apparent. Gaines gets a chance to solo on tenor sax on "Since We've Been Together" and "Tell Me What Have I Done Wrong?", and makes the best of most. On "Since" Myers also lays down a harp solo that just sizzles. "Rack 'Em Up" is that rare album that will please both traditional blues fans and those listeners who like a more contemporary approach. The odd coupling of Myers and Funderburgh becomes more attractive with each outing.

SONG OF THE SOUTH has basically been banned from public screenings by the Walt Disney Company following severe criticism of the films depiction of African-Americans in the post-Civil War South. Mark's "SNL" Episode Review (9/29/01) Alicia Keys, is a talented R B pianist and singer. for that part of the review whereMark takes a in about twenty; in fairness to Mike myers, however, Linda http://www.saturday-night-live.com/snl/reviews/01-02/witherspoon/mark-p.html
Extractions: September 29, 2001 OH MY GOD, it's starting again. Why oh why did I become a reviewer? Every Saturday night shackled to a television, watching ninety minutes of often indifferently-written sketch comedy; when will the cycle of madness ever end? I want to LIVE! When will you let me LIVE?! Actually, this probably isn't the most optimistic way to begin the first review. I'll just delete tha..hmm. My backspace button doesn't seem to be working. Okay, then I'll highlight and dele..what? That's not working either? Sizz-on of a biz-itch. Perhaps it's best to start anew. For the 27th time, Saturday Night Live kicks off a new season and hopes that the ball of laughter gets downed on the one-yard line of hilarity without bouncing into the end zone of boredom or getting returned for a touchdown of mediocrity and thus facing the humiliation of the opposing player's touchdown dance of ridiculousness. In an unrelated story, I am challenging Dennis Miller for this year's Most Laboured Football Analogy Award at the ESPYs. More important than the SNL season, of course, is the start of the SNL reviewing season, where we can begin the painstaking process of examining and discussing every minute detail about the show that takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin', Saturday Night Live. Oh, the minutiae! As you can also tell, my safety-blanket warning last spring that I might not be back to review episodes this season turned out to be much ado about nothing. My concerns about my school schedule turned out to be for naught, since my classload on Mondays and Tuesdays is quite light. The only possible problems could stem from both my job and my new position as a staff writer for the UWO school paper, but I don't anticipate anything coming up major enough for me to miss out on reviewing. The only effect could be that my pre-show preamble may be a little shorter. So, all of my fans that were worried about having to fill the SNL review void with, I dunno, Stooge, can rest easy. (I'm just kidding Stooge! It's all in good fun! I love you man!)

The flow of the evening was unhurried and relaxed. The tellers' delivery was smooth. Our tellers represent more than 100 years of storytelling experience. It sure showed. 185 people battled traffic to come to the Ohio Historical Center to hear our stories. Rick McCracken-Bennett was the MC at the very start and Stephen Hollen was great at the end. Rick's easy delivery style and his guitar were great as he reminded folks with music to keep their cell phones turned off and to enjoy the show. Stephen, as usual, had folks rolling in the aisles. Squirrel Fishing will be a major sport, I predict. The tellers were so engaging. Greg and Natalie Wittmann started us off and it was wonderful. Joyce Geary, Lyn Ford, Melanie Pratt, David Austin Sky, Harold and Anita Eisenstein and, of course, Adele Brown wove stories as they should be done: giving the listeners professional entertainment. The behind-the-scenes people were excellent. Refreshment were varied and plentiful. because of Jeannette Bruton, Karla and Zalika Corbett. Gershwin By Rodney Greenberg: LINKED BOOK & CD REVIEW:- Of course Bernstein made his mark as a complete all round musician as composer, conductor, pianist and teacher. of this new study is Paul myers who is a http://www.musicweb.uk.net/film/lenny.htm
Extractions: This is the latest in Phaidon's 20th Century Composers series - all the books are produced in the award winning format of 240 pages in semi-hard back covers with an outline coverage of the composer's life and a non-technical analysis of the works with bibliography, discography and list of works. This new book concentrates on "Lenny" as a composer and the list of his works is quite surprising in its scope and volume, including three symphonies and other orchestral works, operas, musicals, and church and chamber music. Of course Bernstein made his mark as a complete all round musician - as composer, conductor, pianist and teacher. I always remember him with affection in the latter capacity having been bowled over and much influenced by his remarkable series of lectures entitled "The Unanswered Question". The only film for which Bernstein composed an original score was On The Waterfront . But of course much of his work as a conductor of opera or concert works is available on video. More specifically his major stage works have been filmed: On The Town in 1949, with Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Jules Munchin (from which a substantial amount of Bernstein's original music was dropped); and, of course, in 1961
