Extractions: The first reunion will take place at the 47th Regular Concert, with the violinist Rainer Kussmaul. In the autumn of 1998, Kussmaul appeared at MCO as a soloist along with the pianist Andreas Steieir. Their performance of Mendelssohn's Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings drew resounding applause. This time, he will parlay his brilliant career as the former concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic as he sits in the concertmaster's chair throughout the program, leading the MCO. Another piece in the program that is being much talked about is Beethoven's Triple Concerto for Piano, Violin and Cello, which features two string soloists that MCO is proud of Takumi Kubota on the violin and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi on the cello together with one of the most exciting pianists of the younger generation, Olli Mustonen. These artists of remarkable talent, who have captured the attention of the world's music circles with their distinctly individual performances, will join forces with MCO to produce a thrilling moment. They will fulfill all your expectations.

Extractions: Opera House, March 19 It wasn't that pianist Olli Mustonen's flamboyant stage gestures in Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini - hands flying up as from a hot iron, wrists elaborately rolled before a phrase as though about to make a courtly bow - were affected. His impulse towards musical immediacy and dynamism is too genuine for that. However, overlaid on his steely fingers and intensity of attack, these mannerisms did add to an overall spikiness of sound, where the projection and articulation were arresting but where warmth and variety of tone colour tended to be absent. Mustonen is an engaging musician and approaches each phrase with energy, vividness and flair, but this didn't create much tonal depth, particularly in the slower variations. His spirited directness never flagged, though occasionally, in the interests of spaciousness, it could have afforded to. Before this, Edo de Waart led the orchestra in a reading of Mozart's
