The way things worked out though, he ended up working in Calgary. It was there in 1979 that he met Paul and Mike , while they were forming a new band. Doug had just finished a stint with Foster Child . The band relocated to Vancouver, and after 27 rejections from various record labels, Jeff Burns from CBS caught their act and signed them up. The rest, as the saying goes, is history. The band's first album sold millions, and mainstream radio embraced the band's polished sound

Extractions: Guitarist RICHARD SMITH may have a common name, but his latest CD, Soulidified Think Tank (Blue Note Records) is an appropriate title for guitarist PAT MARTINO 's new CD. Dedicated to John Coltrane, the disc features challenging pieces like pianist Harold Mabern's "Phineas Trane" (a tribute to Coltrane and pianist Phineas Newborn) and a 12-minute reading of Coltrane's "Africa." Recorded in just three days, Think Tank features a suitably heady supporting cast in saxophonist Joe Lovano, pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Lewis Nash. On the featured "Earthlings," the elastic rhythms of McBride and Nash provide Lovano, Rubalcaba, and a bopping Martino with ample chances to use their own think tanks. As banjo star Béla Fleck writes in the liner notes, "The impression I get is that it was very easy for these guys to play together." Guitarist LARRY CARLTON first encountered jazz in junior high school, hearing the great six-string phrasing of Joe Pass on the Gerald Wilson Big Band album Moment of Truth. Carlton started simultaneous session (The Crusaders, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan) and solo careers during the 70s and has since appeared on more than 100 gold albums, including his film and television scores. The guitarist comes full-circle with his concurrent work in Fourplay and new solo CD

Extractions: As Bad As It Gets I will be the first to admit that a musician's life is, at times, not all it's cracked up to be. There are times that you make more money than you can count and others when you don't know where your next meal is coming from. You have to deal with smoky bars, shifty club owners, crooked agents, and even unreliable musicians at times. With that said, I would not give it up for anything in the world - in fact, I highly recommend it. A short time after I had moved to Westchester, I was working with pianist George Candreva on a rhythm and blues project. In the very early stages, I was on the guitar, George was on organ/keyboards and Gary Schwartz was on drums. Gary was a new acquaintance of mine and a fine drummer. Since those days we have played a lot together and I have come to regard him as a dear friend. Our first day of auditions for a bassist and singer turned out to be a bust. The people we had scheduled either couldn't make it, got lost or had canceled. The three of us spent the entire day playing jazz standards. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and the music really sounded good. After several hours we concluded that we had a great group right there. We didn't need a bassist or a singer. We decided to form our jazz organ trio a la Jimmy Smith/Wes Montgomery under the guise of the "Affirmation Trio".
