After Liszt and Rachmaninov he is arguably the greatest pianist of all time. All the recordings I have of his, including broadcasts on various radio stations, are unequalled for the accuracy of his playing, the profound understanding he has of all the music he plays, his devotion to the composers intentions and a wonderful sound. His point about performers bringing their own concepts to a work is a vital one. The performers responsibility is to realise the composer's intentions not one's own or that of the conductor. As I have often said, as an example, we do not want Karajan's Beethoven but Beethoven's Beethoven. Michelangeli's recordings of the Debussy Preludes, the Grieg Piano Concerto, the truly magnificent Rachmaninov Piano Concerto no. 4 in G minor will never be bettered

Extractions: When I saw this 2 hour program on tv, I was shocked with all the old but great footage! There are some recordings shown from the thirtys, fortys, up until present. This VHS Starts off with a few great pianists playing the first of Beethoven masterwork the "Apassionata sonata." They switch off pianists during the piece. They tell 20 of the great pianists of the century life stories. Famous musicians such as Evegeny Kissin and Daniel Barenboim discuss these pianist thoughout the VHS. I watch this almosts every night because each time I learn something new about Josef Hoffman or Vladimir Horowitz etc. This 1 is a keeper! Suddenly a lean, tall figure strolled out onto the podium, and the crowd practically yelled themselves hoarse as the lights came on and Maksim, clad in simple black shirt and pants, made his way to the piano.

Extractions: What amazing footage!!! Priceless This is a great DVD with some of the most amazing footage I have ever seen. First, there is video of Josef Hofmann playing Rachmaninoff's prelude op.3 no.2 in it's entirety. Then there's the stunning Cziffra playing Liszt's Grand Gallope Chromatique faster than I thought possible. Also Richter plays Chopin's etude Op10 No12 in like 1 minute 50 seconds. No complaints about any of the content in this documentary. My only complaint is that EVERY piece of footage is completely wrecked(on the DVD, at least) by the fact that the video and audio are almost 1 second out of sync. Most people wouldn't notice. But it is very noticable to a pianist and it is annoying, almost to the point where I feel like going out and buying the VHS edition.

Extractions: Comment : "The Art of Piano" is a brilliant, fascinating look at over one hundred years (from Plante to Richter) of pianism, with rare footage of some of history's greatest pianists performing live or discussing their art. For me, the most compelling footage was that of Cortot, Backhaus and Arrau, but nearly every second of this film is filled with compelling performances. Each pianist featured in "The Art of Piano" is a great artist, with a unique style and interpretation of music, but there is one drawback for me: this film is incomplete. Where are Schnabel, Gieseking, Serkin, Kempff, Katchen, Lhevinne, Cliburn and countless other great 20th century pianists? This film a treasure for all music lovers, but it is too exclusive for me to give it five stars. Hopefully there will be sequel that covers all those left out in part one. Rating: 5 of 5
