The event will include readings and musical settings, including five new settings of poems by Emerson, performed by the Cygnus Ensemble. The program also includes two important settings of Hollander's work by Elliott Carter and Milton Babbitt. There are few poets whose work has been set so frequently by major American composers as John Hollander. "Philomel," Milton Babbitts landmark work is one example, and Elliott Carters "Of Challenge and of Love" on this program is another, as well as his collaborations with George Perle and Hugo Weisgall. Dr. Hollander has written several volumes of poetry and seven books of criticism. His honors include the Bollingen and the Levinson Prizes; the MLA Shaughnessy Medal; and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Extractions: Some thoughts about Rubbra's music I'm lately something of a fan of the music of Edmund Rubbra (1901-1986). He wrote 11 symphonies, 3 violin sonatas, 4 string quartets, 2 concerti for piano, a violin concerto, a viola concerto, several masses, 2 piano trios, a cello sonata, songs, and various other works. Note : Well, the week April 23-7 (2001) is over, and BBC Radio 3 has finished its Composer of the Week segments featuring Edmund Rubbra's music. I caught three of the five using Realplayer , and enjoyed them very much. Some thoughts on the music - especially that new to me - that was played in those three hours may show up on this site in the next while, to join other comments on other works by the composer that I've jotted on this site (and its original incarnation) over the last few years. Extractions: BBC 1962-1963 Across the course of forty-eight fifty and sixty-minute episodes, Suspense presented audiences with isolated drama-thriller productions loosely connected under the thematic premise of anxiety, uncertainty, fear, loathing and betrayal, and the impact these emotions bring to bear on the person or persons involved. Stemming from the successful introduction of twenty-five minute tea-time thriller serials in 1960, Suspense featured adaptations of popular thriller novels combined with modern-day tales and drew the viewer into the story via the simple thread of something nasty lurking under the surface of a seemingly placid and innocent situation. The production aspect inherent in the series was altogether unique, in that it was one of the only occasions in which BBC Wales, BBC Birmingham, BBC Bristol, BBC North and BBC Scotland combined and directed their artistic licence and energies into one programme. The series afforded the opportunity to employ fresh writing talent (using writers never before having worked for BBC Television, film writers turning their hand to television drama, or writers fresh to the industry) and to produce quality prime-time productions featuring some of the best existing, and strongest emerging, acting talent in Britain during 1962 and 1963.
