E-mail this story to a friend print me This falls School of Music Guest Artist Series at Illinois State University will open with a stage full of very familiar faces on Friday, Sept. 26, in the Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall. The first set of guest artists will not have traveled far. The State Farm Employees Association Big Band will perform in an 8 p.m. concert with the Illinois State University Jazz Ensembles. Tickets are $6 for the general public, $5 for ISU faculty-staff and $4 for students and senior citizens, and are available at the CPA box office from noon to 5 p.m. weekdays and before the event. Redbird alumnus Tom Fatten, president of the State Farm Employees Association Big Band, said the group is open to all employees regardless of playing ability, including retirees and spouses. The group provides entertainment for State Farm events, official functions and community events. Most of the bands members played instruments while in high school or colleges, and many are former band directors or military bandsmen.

Formerly co-director of the Contemporary Music Festival at Indiana State University , McCarthy now directs the American New Arts Festival and the Akron New Music Ensemble. He has made guest appearances as Composer-in-Residence at East Central University Michigan State University, Delta College , in Michigan , and Cleveland State University this year. At the Interlochen (MI) Arts Camp, McCarthy, who continues as a composition instructor, recently was appointed Music Director/Conductor of the Interlochen Festival Orchestra. Extractions: Chris was trained intensely as a classical musician since age 6 and has focused almost entirely on the piano. He has studied piano at the Cincinnati College - Conservatory of Music, Univ. of Michigan, the Interlochen Center for the Arts, Central Michigan University, and Wayne State University. His teachers have included Steinway artist Dr. Louis Nagel, Telarc Records Recording Artist Michael Chertock, Portuguese Concert Pianist Dr. Alexandra Mascolo David, and Dr. Arvi Sinka, among others. He has an extensive classical repertoire as well as his own catalog of original songs written mostly between 2001 and today. These are available on his new EP "been there before." In 2001 and early 2002, Chris performed many solo rock shows throughout Michigan at small clubs. These shows include appearances at Xhedo's Cafe and Jacoby's (Detroit). He has ventured into bigger venues including the Arts, Beats and Eats Festival and the Jambalaya Festival both in the summer of 2003. Chris is often compared to Bruce Hornsby, the Josh Dodes Band, Dave Matthews Band, and many followers add that the vocal style somewhat reflects Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins. When not playing music he has a love for sports, especially golf, as well as movies, stand-up comedy, nostalgia, dating, meeting new people, and just having a good time. Chris currently resides outside Detroit, Michigan.
