Emil Von Sauer Etudes EMIL VON SAUER Twenty Concert Etudes oleg marshev, pianist DANACORD DACOCD 487 (F) (DDD) TT 7721. Emil Georg Konrad Sauer (1862 http://classicalcdreview.com/omes.htm
Extractions: DANACORD DACOCD 487 (F) (DDD) TT: 77:21 Sauer's works include 2 piano concertos, 2 sonatas and 29 concert studies, 20 of which are included on this recent CD issued in Europe about two ears ago, only now (May 2001) in the U.S. Only one, the first, is actually called "concert-etude," in G-flat; with a playing time of 8:34 it is the longest of all. The others have colorful, imaginative titles (Sighing Breezes, The Hunt, Sirens, Bird Songs etc. with one called "L'Eteuf" (which apparently has something to do with a tennis ball) translated as "fangball." Although all are of extreme difficulty, several are devoted to specific piano techniques, i.e. octaves and trills. All are salon music of the highest order with an abundance of arpeggios and gossamer textures. The sedate center section of Vision , in B minor is quite similar to the central section of Chopin's Scherzo No. 3. Young Russian pianist Oleg Marshev, winner of many prestigious prizes in the piano competition world, plays Sauer's music with finesse as well as technical assurance. It's a delectable program, best taken in small doses and has been very well recorded. If you have a keen interest in Emil von Saueryou might investigate the superb 3-CD set (Marston 53002) containing his Liszt recordings along with many shorter pieces recorded in the late '20s and '30s when Sauer was in his prime a collection that includes two of the concert etudes on the new Danacord recording. A second Marshev is in the works which will include the remaining concert etudes and other Sauer pieces.

Extractions: Recorded Caird Hall, Dundee, Scotland, 31 March and 1 April 2003. A windfall season of Shostakovich piano concerti is marked by three contrasting and colourful new versions, each paired with an equally colourful programme filler: the op. 34 Preludes on one disc, and another piano concerto each on the remaining two, one by Rodion Shchedrin, one by Galina Ustvolskaya. Of the two Shostakovich piano concerti, the Second is the one that can claim greater structural clarity and expressive focus. It is arguably the better piece of music. But it is the youthful First Concerto, with its mischievous departures from concerto protocol that offers pianists far more interpretive possibilities - a fact that may explain its greater popularity over the years. The current set of performances reflects the wide range of interpretive possibilities available. It also demonstrates how the quality of the performance by the same artist with similar interpretive parameters can vary from one concerto to the next.

Extractions: Oleg Marshev plays Emil von Sauer's études here with control and feeling. Von Sauer, who composed these salon style pieces, was himself a legendary and theatrical pianist who studied with both Nikolai Rubinstein and Franz Liszt and the difficulty of the pieces reflects this pedigree. While thematically they are not as strong as Chopin's études or Liszt's Transcendental Studies they are far from lacking in imagination and are well worth owning. Buy this CD with amazon.co.uk here

Extractions: 11:42 PM CDT on Saturday, May 8, 2004 By OLIN CHISM / The Dallas Morning News Dallas' newest musical series, sponsored by the International Performing Arts Company, completed its first season on Saturday night with the appearance of another pianist from the Russian school, Oleg Marshev. There was plenty of virtuosity on display in Mr. Marshev's recital in Caruth Auditorium, though not much depth. The most interesting and overall satisfactory performance of the evening was of the most obscure work on the program, Variations on a Theme by Rode by Carl Czerny. Czerny, who flourished in the first half of the 19th century, is certainly a known figure in music, though not as a writer of art music. Generations of piano students have played his piano exercises, which do give the fingers a workout but which are, unfortunately, boring. His reputation as a performer and teacher is better. A pupil of Beethoven, he gave the world premiere of the

As such he gets to play the first note of every concert it presents, after which his instrument is often submerged within the overall orchestral sound. It was a treat to hear what the oboe can do on its own, indeed the programme had been chosen specifically to display the widest range of sounds and styles. We take the expressive range of the violin so much for granted that it was fascinating to see an instrument like the oboe being called upon to produce a similarly powerful expressive impact. And produce it Peter Dykes certainly did in Poulencs Oboe Sonata, with its mood of graceful resignation, which was calmly and beautifully played. After Korean composer Isang Yuns sparse and mysterious 1971 work Piri came Dykes flamboyant virtuoso display in Morceau de Salon by Czech composer Johan Kalliwoda.

Extractions: It began, just as we had composed ourselves in order to listen, with a bellowed announcement delivered on behalf of the concert's sponsor, Vector, forbidding the use of cellphones during concerts. Then conductor James Judd came to the podium, grasped the microphone and uttered some innocuous re-marks about the music to follow. Why do we have programme notes, one wonders. Can't concert audiences be left alone to settle in readiness to listen to music instead of being blabbed at by conductors? Finally, we were permitted a few moments of peace before Schubert's genial Symphony No 5 began. The second half of the concert offered a wholly different experience, with beautiful performances of three pieces from the Rosamunde Incidental Music and a truly distinguished one of the Unfinished Symphony. Avoiding the temptation to make the work portentous, Judd concentrated on melodic flow. In this he was significantly helped by the superb playing of the orchestra's principal oboeist Robert Orr and clarinettist Patrick Barry.

Peter and the Wolf and the Classical For a musician whose reputation (and certainly living) was initially made largely through his piano playing, Prokofiev regretfully made very few recordings. Apart from a polished account of his Third Piano Concerto and a few pieces, there are some not altogether reliable Duo-Art piano roll recordings, whose effect is desultory and a poor reflection of the pianist that can be heard on the few 78s he made. For all the colour and exuberance of the earlier work, Betrothal has greater lyrical depth, just as colourful orchestration and more involving characters. It is an ideal introduction to Prokofiev as opera composer, very much in the lushly lyrical style he first brought to fruition in Romeo and Juliet and looking forward to his epic masterpiece War and Peace Betrothal in a Monastery was composed shortly after Prokofiev's anti-German and apparently orthodox (at least politically) Soviet opera Semyon Kotko : the latter work had reached the stage virtually still-born, its original director, Meyerhold, arrested by Stalin's NKVD and the work effectively wrong-footed by the Nazi Soviet pact of 1939. Hardly surprisingly, Prokofiev chose to retreat from the official demands of Socialist Realism by setting Sheridan's play

It is also part of an ongoing project of the Brittish Piano Concerto Foundation, Naxos and Peter Donohoe to record British piano concertos. Not everyone will react as ambivalently I have to this disc. It is really an important recording that may garner a large following with it spirit and verve. Donohoe and Yuasa go for broke with the concertos, particularly Donohoe, whose bravura pianism brings out their Russian character." ARG
