Extractions: Western Astrology As mentioned in the 1st lesson, Vedic astrology uses the same twelve zodiac signs as in Western astrology. The signs are a twelve-fold division of the zodiac no matter if the zodiac is a tropical or sidereal zodiac. Their meanings, as well, are virtually identical in both systems. However, the classical rulerships of the signs are used, instead of the modern rulerships of Chiron, Pluto, Uranus, and Neptune for Virgo, Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces respectively. Also, since Vedic astrology uses an Equal House system, one sign always correlates entirely to one house. A good basic metaphor for understanding the relationship between the signs, the planets and houses, in either the Vedic or Western system, is to think of watching a play on a theatrical stage. The planets are the characters in the play, while the houses are the stage set in which the planets or characters are acting. Lastly, the signs are the costumes that the planets are wearing, as well as the decor of the various stage sets or houses. Therefore, the signs add color to the basic inherent qualities of the planets and the houses.

Extractions: In the early years of the state, some 13 years after the central "towers" of music in Israel were built - the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, which was founded in Tel Aviv in 1936 on the initiative of the Jewish violinist, Bronislav Huberman who brought the best Jewish players from Europe, and the Israel Broadcasting Authority Orchestra, which was founded in Jerusalem in the same year - every music loving citizen could travel to hear concerts performed, mainly by musicians from the "towers," and only seldom would he have to choose between two concerts on the same day. Today the situation is radically different. Anyone willing to devote an entire week to hearing the concerts given throughout Israel, could not manage it. Even hearing more than one concert a day, one could attend but a minuscule part of all the musical events in the country, which, geographically speaking, is one of the smallest among the countries of western musical culture, but one constantly expanding in breadth and depth. Those who are attracted to the various forms of Jewish religious music could attend one of the many synagogue services throughout Israel on Sabbath morning. Afterwards, they can choose one of the choral, orchestral, chamber, or solo concerts that regularly take place at the Tzavta Club in Tel Aviv, or in Beit Alon in the nearby town of Givatayim, or drive further afield.

Extractions: Joe Lovano Quartet lights fire at Tanglewood, 9/4/98 by Seth Rogovoy (LENOX , Mass., Sept 6, 1998) The Joe Lovano Quartet kicked off the weekend jazz festival in Ozawa Hall with the sort of exciting, in-the-moment improvisation that characterizes jazz at its best and which is seen all too rarely at Tanglewood. Lovano's group was both tightly controlled and musically loose and freewheeling, allowing the soloists to compose on-the-spot while the ensemble retained the swinging feel and the harmonic framework of the individual tunes. Lovano kicked off his set with "Fort Worth," one of his signature tunes, on which he alternated bebop lines with ascending and descending arpeggios, occasionally stopping to explore a particular riff he liked or stumbled upon. In the first of several demonstrations of the intuitive sympathy that existed among the players in Lovano's group, Lovano laid out while pianist Kenny Werner echoed his solo, constructing his own statement out of block chords and favored riffs. Lovano gave himself a workout on the second number, "Alexander the Great," which showcased his burnished tone, all elasticity and warmth, in the service of suggestively bent and slurred notes. Werner's accompaniment was particularly attuned to the rhythms laid down by drummer Idris Muhammad, with all his notes seemingly landing in the spaces the drummer carefully left open for him.

Guy Capuzzo won an Eastman Graduate Teaching Assistant Prize for 199697. He read a paper at the 1997 MTSNYS conference entitled, "Pitch-Space Ordering Types in the Recent Solo Music of Elliott Carter." A second paper, entitled "Three Dilettantes, Two Recording Contracts, One Chronic Schizophrenic: Some Issues Raised by The Shaggs and Wesley Willis," was read at an Eastman Theory Symposium. Guy's second book, Theory for the Contemporary Guitarist, is enjoying strong sales both in the U.S. and internationally, and is being translated into German for a 1998 release there. Having passed the PhD Qualifying Exams in May of 1997, Guy is working on a dissertation on Carter's recent music. He is writing in New Jersey, Heidelberg, and Basel. Ed Jurkowski, who has been teaching at Lethbridge in Canada for a year now, writes that things are going well: "We've settled into Lethbridge pretty nicely. Our house is about a 15 min. walk to the University. We live a little less than an hours drive to the Waterton mountain range. It's truly quite a spectacular sight. Colleen's been able to find employment. She's teaching in the Psychology department of the local college. He's 2-1/2 now, is into pretend play a lot, and just will never stop talking."

Extractions: Star-Bulletin HONG KONG Raymond Sarreal sits in a green and black chair gently blowing into an old flute on the cluttered second-floor hallway of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. The dark eyes of the promising 13-year-old Philippines musician appear crossed as he watches his fingers manipulate the flute while trying desperately to capture the notes teacher Bernard Goldberg has patiently prodded him to find. Sarreal, the youngest member of this year's renowned Asian Youth Orchestra, doesn't seem bothered by the faint cacophony of orchestral sounds from the 15 music rooms lining the hall, teachers' instructions to students, even some laughter. Sarreal over and over again attempts to find the note, frowning and shaking his head. Several minutes pass and the boy's eyes sparkle when he hits the chord. "Yes, yes," the boy says with a grin.
