Extractions: Victor Borge by: Bruce Johnson Victor Borge passed away December 23. If he was a clown or not depends upon whether you use an exclusive or inclusive style definition of clowning. It is a matter of personal opinion. I personally think he was a masterful clown who used a naturalistic appearance. In any case, clowns could learn a lot by studying his work, which fortunately is well documented by audio and video recordings. I had the pleasure of seeing to of his live performances. At the age of 91, he was still performing. The only adjustment he had to make for age was eliminating the fall off his piano bench. He was the subject of the cover story of The Clown In Times Volume Six Issue Three. Here is some information excerpted from that article. (The original article is much too long to reproduce here.) Victor Borge (Jan. 3, 1909 - Dec. 23, 2000) Victor Borge said, "to people who take music seriously, I'm a musician. To people who don't take music seriously, I'm a comedian. To people who don't take anything seriously, I'm a clown." Whether or not you consider Victor Borge a clown, clowns can learn from him and be inspired by him. For example, one of his routines is to start playing a piece, which doesn't come out right. He takes a closer look at the sheet music, turns it over, resumes playing, and now it sounds right. Arthur Pedlar uses a similar bit in his routine. One of Victor's sons tours with him playing an inept page-turner. Albert Alter plays a similar role in the BozoArts Duo. Victor combines physical comedy, verbal humor, and amazing musical ability.

Extractions: Matthew Van Brink is an American composer and pianist born in 1978 and currently living in Boston, completing a DMA in composition at Boston University. He has studied composition with Bruce Adolphe at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, with David Dzubay, Samuel Adler and Don Freund at Indiana University, and with John Harbison and Lukas Foss at Boston University. Piano studies were with Jeremy Denk and Evelyn Brancart at Indiana University. As a performer, Van Brink is foremost a pianist, but he has also played accordion in opera and chamber music and has conducted performances of his own and his colleagues' compositions. Van Brink instructs undergraduate ear training courses at Boston University, teaches keyboard harmony at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and serves this year as Composer-in-Residence for Collage New Music Ensemble. Van Brink's recent compositions include music for dance and film as well as chamber music for the concert setting. Van Brink composed music for "Running at the Sunshine," a unique work for dance and spoken word, in collaboration with choreographer Judith Chaffee and writer Jesse Jarnow. In his jazz score to Patrick Ford's short film "Francine St Claire's Mail," influences from Van Brink's jazz compositions and jazz piano playing, usually embedded or just hinted-at in his concert music, are manifest in full force. Other recent pieces include the trio Control Room, commissioned by the New York Youth Symphony; Up, Up, and Up commissioned by FleetBoston Celebrity Series and premiered by violinist Stefan Jackiw and pianist David Deveau; and Dal Dosai, a flute sonata commissioned by Thomas Robertello. ASCAP awarded the latter two pieces with Young Composer Awards in 2002 and 2003. Van Brink curently serves at composer-in-residence for Boston's Collage New Music Ensemble.

Eight pianists will divide the set, each performing four sonatas, between Oct. 5, 2001 and April 19, 2002 in Emory's Performing Arts Studio. General admission tickets are $15 each or $90 for the series of eight concerts. For information or to order tickets, call the Arts at Emory box office at 404-727-5050 or send e-mail to boxoffice@emory.edu. Created over the span of his lifetime (1770-1827), Beethoven's sonatas for piano include some of his earliest and some of his last works. "The 32 pieces express the joy and suffering, sensuality and spirituality that make Beethoven one of the most enduring and popular composers of all time," says series organizer William Ransom, the Mary Emerson Professor of Music and artistic director of the Emory Chamber Music Society. Having eight different artists perform the cycle will provide different perspectives on the body of music, says Ransom. "This is one of the most exciting projects I have been involved in, and I am thrilled to be able to put it together for Atlanta."

Steve Allen did it during the "Golden Age" of television. Bill Murray's alter-ego, Nick the Lounge Singer, crooned his way through "Saturday Night Live." Black Velvet Flag shook up the Cocktail Nation of the '90s. Now the torch song has been reignited by Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine. "I'm a big fan of irony," says Mark Jonathan Davis (aka Richard Cheese) during a recent interview at Club Madrid. "It's the wrong thing to do, and I enjoy doing the wrong thing." Davis is an unlikely and reluctant rock star. During high school, he worked at a hobby store warehouse and passed the time by singing rock-radio hits in the style of Frank Sinatra. In 1994, while working on Kevin and Bean's morning radio show on L.A.'s KROQ, he created the character of Paul Talbert, the 55-year-old intern who recorded his own "retro" versions of alternative hits. Davis eventually started his own company, producing television jingles and commercials, but he still wanted to take his idea further and make an album. With backing from Oglio Records, Lounge Against the Machine was recorded with studio musicians and released in 2000.
