Featured as guest performer this month will be storyteller Katie Green . A former speech pathologist, Katie has adapted a penchant for teaching and language to the craft of storytelling. She is known for her skill in finding the heart of a story and bringing characters to life through voice and movement. Her programs and favorite subject areas include ancient Egytian myths, the tales of Hans Christian Andersen, and ghost stories. Beyond her work as a performer, Katie also serves as a storytelling teacher and organizer. She is past president of the League for the Advancement of New England Storytelling (LANES), was a 1998 recipient of the National Storytelling Association's Service Award, and has taught hundreds in her storytelling classes at Fitchburg State College. Her performances are featured on two audiocassettes and she has a CD, The Red Hat: Adventure Tales for Young People , in the works.

'I never thought of music as a business, living in a fantasy world where music is concerned. I was always very proud and if I couldn't do it on my own I didn't want to do it. I do have a certain intolerance for incompetence, preferring to live in my own ivory tower rather than be nice to people who are not worth the effort,' he continues, 'I haven't played the social game or attempted to ingratiate myself with people in power. Some might say this has cost me, but I don't think so. I live very well, and those who appreciate what I have to say and do make my career gratifying.' Cicadas provide a shrill counterpoint to our conversation on a mild August afternoon as we sit on a shady patio at the rear of Rosand's Connecticut home, where he lives with his wife, Monica Woo, in a rambling yet cosy house that is filled with mementos, each one possessing a unique resonance of the people, places and events that fill a lifetime.

Extractions: Achron, born 1886, Lodzdzieje, Poland (now Lasdjaj, Lithuania). Died, 1943, Los Angeles. Violinist, teacher and composer. His brother Isador was a pianist. A child prodigy and a concert soloist. He studied composition in Russia under Anatoly Ljadov. Toured widely, giving more than 1000 concerts between 1919-1922. Served as Head, and gave Violin Master classes in Leningrad's Artist Union. He joined the Society for Jewish Folk Music in 1911. In 1922 established a publishing company called "Jibneh" in Berlin. Traveled to Palestine in 1924, staying only a few months. In 1925, Achron emigrated to the U.S. and settled in New York. Worked for a short time rearranging Yiddish theater music for Maurice Schwartz. Taught violin at the Westchester Conservatory. In 1934, he moved to Hollywood, composing film music. As Albert Weisser points out in his landmark work The Modern Renaissance of Jewish Music , Joseph Achron in the United States was between two worlds: his Jewish compositions were generally too sophisticated for Jewish audiences of the day, and his Jewish ethnic music not of interest for general classical audiences that understood modern music. Weisser states: "Since his death his reputation has fallen into somwhat of an eclipse; however it is just about due for a revival." Some 50 years after Weisser wrote those words, Achron's revivial seems to be finally happening. The pianist Jascha Nemtsov has taken up the charge and produced some brilliant recordings of his works. This is the Milken Archive of American Jewish Music. And you can own (or give) it all. While most people have heard of Jewish composers such as Aaron Copland, Kurt Weill and Leonard Bernstein, there exists a large repertoire of music specifically related to American Jewish experiences that remains relatively unknown. This is why Lowell Milken, chairman and co-founder of the Milken Family Foundation, established the Milken Archive project in 1990. He wanted to record and preserve this repertoire, and make it accessible to the public, accompanied by information about the origins and traditions of American Jewish music.
