One which comes to mind is Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto , which is marked "Moderato". I point this out because commonly there is normally an "Allegro" (fast) first, followed by a slow movement and then ending with a relatively fast movement. Brahms on the other hand opts for "Maestoso-poco piu moderato" (majestically, a "little more moderato" - whatever that means...) and an Adagio second movement followed by another relatively moderate third movement Rondo (Allegro non troppo-piu animato-Tempo I) It is the marking of "Maestoso" in the first movement that I feel Brahms must have carefully picked to express his feelings of grief. The interplay of the woodwind against a backdrop of syncopated strings with sudden, fortissimo tutti entries strengthen this impression at this tempo, compared to a faster pace. Brahms wrote two piano concertos: the first in D minor and the second in B-flat major. Both are rather lengthy, like a symphony - roughly in the region of 50 minutes apiece. His Second Concerto is equally interesting with a distinct solo passage in the third movement played by cello and accompanied by the piano, something seldom seen. Written originally as a sonata for two pianos it was then turned into a symphony which finally found itself becoming a concerto. It begins with a very strong tutti reminiscent like that of an orchestral tutti . Its premiere was met with mixed feelings because of its size and the intensity needed to pull it off. The work was dubbed a "symphony with piano obligato" by the critics at the first performance.

One interviewer called him "a reserved personality who dislikes any kind of publicity or self-promotion," but his record speaks for itself: winning the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the Leeds Competition and the Enesco Prize back in the 1960s, when he was just beginning his career. Now Lupu , who turns 59 this year, returns to Benaroya Hall for concerts at 8 p.m. tomorrow and 2 p.m. Sunday, where this elusive pianist will play one of the loveliest of Beethoven's five piano concertos: No. 4. Lupu joins conductor David Robertson for this program, which also offers Brahms' big Symphony No. 3 and Copland's Symphony No. 2. Born in Romania in 1945, Lupu began piano studies at age 6 and went on to study at the same school that produced legendary but short-lived pianist Dinu Lipatti . He also spent seven years at the Moscow Conservatory before his competition victories launched him on a career spanning the world's great concert stages. Among his recording highlights are two-piano collaborations with Murray Perahia , another Leeds Competition winner. He's a brilliant partner for singers and soloists; a disc of lieder with soprano Barbara Hendricks is particularly fine. His repertoire tends to focus (though not exclusively) on the great middle-European composers: Brahms, Schubert, Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann.

By DEBBY LEVINSON AN ALL-BEETHOVEN PROGRAM is always a treat, but the BSO's selection of Romanian pianist Radu Lupu as soloist made a special afternoon even more spectacular. Lupu's technique was flawless, and he brought a sensitive touch to the glissandi and trills of the "Allegro con brio" of the Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor . His touch was never overbearing or ponderous, even in the lower range, and his notes in the higher range sparkled. His performance of the concerto's cadenza was brilliant; Lupu drew out both the passage's storminess and its gentle lyricism. The third piece of the afternoon, the Symphony No. 3 in E flat , "Eroica," at first lacked the polish of the Piano Concerto there were some overly loud horn notes that bordered on the harsh but when the orchestra settled down, the piece regained its glorious, thunderous character. The second movement, "Marcia funebre; Adagio assai," was appropriately dark but dragged occasionally. The BSO's joyful, spirited rendition of the brisk-tempoed third movement was a welcome change from the moody, depressing atmosphere of the "Marcia funebre." The "Leonore" Overture No. 3
