Extractions: "Radu Lupu, the Romanian pianist," writes the Los Angeles Times, "has always enjoyed playing against type. He purposefully storms on stage, anarchist-gruff, hair and beard a mess. He sits at the cheap straight-backed office chair he prefers to an expensive padded piano bench. He glares at the audience to shut it up. He never, never smiles. And then, when he is really on, he launches into lyrical playing so utterly transporting, so little of this planet, that it seems to know no laws of gravity."

Extractions: by Jay Nordlinger L M ichelle DeYoung is a youngish American mezzo-soprano with a big and burgeoning career: concert dates, operatic roles, recordings, the works. So it was with some anticipation that I attended her recital in Weill Recital Hall (part of the larger Carnegie complex). It could be that DeYoung did not put her best foot forward that evening. Beginning the second half of the program were Six Songs on Poems by D. H. Lawrence Michelle DeYoung must have something on the ball for the vocal world to have responded as positively to her as it has. But these winning qualities were not to the fore in her recent recital. A after A t the end of January, the Orchestre de Paris visited Carnegie Hall, with its music director, Christoph Eschenbach, the German who is set to assume the leadership of the Philadelphia Orchestra. They brought with them the French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who has received some of the most rapturous reviews of the recent period. What was all the fuss about? Was it truly for his pianism, or did it have to do with his steadfast devotion to new music (Aimard has long been a soldier in the army of Pierre Boulez)? B T The second movement felt a bit heavy, not sufficiently

Extractions: Inscriptions from November 1957 reissued from the Decca originals, featuring the late Jean Martinon (1910-1976), the able composer-conductor whose estimate in France was under-rated, but whose repute in Britain and the United States was high, especially in French music and in modern works. Martinon took his cue from Charles Munch, his mentor and professional guide, but Martinon's touch and colors were slightly more classical than Munch's penchant for colossal, romantic intensity. Martinon reminds me more of the classical chastity I hear in Roger Desormiere, whose sensibilities almost match Martinon's exactly. Both traverse modernism with elements of the classical ballet, qualities apparant in the Prokofiev C# Minor Symphony, the composer's swan-song that here, in this pristine rendition, might be an homage to Tchaikovsky.

Extractions: Lucerne's late autumn annual festival is dedicated to the piano and to showing to what advantage it can be heard in the new KKL Concert Hall , which provides the possibility for acoustical tuning of the auditorium to each artist's own preference by adjustments to the reflective canopy over the stage and to the reverberation chamber's doors, a speciality of ARTEC . For musicians, numerous testimonials describe the rare pleasure of being able to hear their own playing very much as it sounds to the audience, which makes them eager to return to Lucerne. During the week I took the opportunity to sample seating positions in many parts of the hall, right up to the high fourth gallery. It is good for listening everywhere, with absolute clarity and projection of the quietest pianissimo , but I found the best sound towards the centre at each level.
Extractions: This disc is one of four releases on the budget-priced Eloquence label containing Radu Lupus 1970s recordings of all five Beethoven Piano Concertos. Lupus performances were widely acclaimed when they first appeared, and it is good to see them back in circulation. They were taped variously between 1971 (No 3) and 1980 (No 1, the only digital recording in the set) and, with the exception of No 3 (in which Lawrence Foster conducts the London Symphony Orchestra), featured the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Zubin Mehta. In fact Decca proudly proclaim these (with their prominent photo-logo of Mehta) to be part of their Zubin Mehta Edition, thereby attributing (by implication) the lions share of the honours to the conductor rather than the soloist! The complete series is gathered together as follows. Nos 1 and 4 share one (well-filled) disc: 466 707-2. The rest are coupled with a variety of other Beethoven orchestral or piano music. No 2 includes (very generously) an almost complete
