Extractions: Pianist Featured on the cover of The New York Times Arts Section and called by Gramophone an exceptionally sensitive pianist, Jenny Lin has established a distinguished place among performers of her generation. She was awarded the Best Performer Prize from the 2000 Golden Music Awards, the "Grammys of Asia", and continues to receive accolades worldwide as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. Ms. Lins current concert season will take her to Austria, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan and the United States. She regularly collaborates with composers many of whom have written works for her. Upcoming recital programs will feature premieres by Donnacha Dennehy, Stefano Gervasoni, Laura Elise Schwendinger, and Johannes Maria Staud. Her discography on BIS Records includes the complete piano music of Ruth Crawford Seeger, and Chinoiserie, featuring a collection of works of Western composers inspired by China. Extractions: No doubt about it: This is a strong contender for fun piano record of the year. Tawainese American Lin has collected 13 keyboard works all written under the spell of the Orient. Some genuinely explore the pentatonic scales of Chinese music; others, like Abram Chasins' "Rush Hour in Hong Kong," are succulent encore pieces. Yet, others are evocations of a mysterious culture. Rossini's winsome "Petite Polka chinoise" is the earliest work; Waeber-Diaz's Improvisation, written for this pianist, is the most recent. Lin cuts across all boundaries and schools: John Adams' brilliant, minimalist "China Gates" (which has nothing to do with "Nixon in China") shares the CD with Cyril Scott's salon masterpiece, "Lotus Land." This generous, 80-minute program, however, wouldn't be quite so appetizing if the pianist didn't dispatch it with almost superhuman verve and delight in her own prowess. The sound is up to the standards established by this Swedish-based company; the notes reveal that Lin recorded it in Stockholm on Chinese New Year last February.
