Extractions: Back to Sun Tzu Military Links Monday May 28, 2001 08:17 PM EDT By Winnie Chung HONG KONG (The Hollywood Reporter) - Jackie Chan will star in two big-budget projects for Hong Kong-based producer-distributor Golden Harvest, one of which, "Sun Tzu's Art of War," is expected to be the most expensive Hong Kong movie ever made. Chan estimates that "Art of War," to be filmed in Mandarin, will cost HK$546 million-HK$624 million ($70 million-$80 million). First on the slate will be "Operation Condor 3," details of which are being kept under wraps. The film is expected to go into production on location in India next year with a budget of at least HK$300 million ($38.5 million), the company said. "Art of War," based on the famous military treatise, will follow. Chinese warrior Sun Tzu's aphoristic essays, written more than 2,000 years ago, attempt to formulate a rational basis for the planning and conduct of military operations. The book is still in print and often used as a guide to business dealings. Chan, speaking at a celebratory dinner Friday for his latest Hong Kong release, Golden Harvest's "The Accidental Spy," said he expects to use "1 (million)-2 million" extras for the war scenes in "Art of War."

Extractions: Activists in Jakarta choked at the sight of General Wiranto being feted at a top hotel recently. Indonesia's former armed forces chief, an enthusiastic crooner, was launching the CD of sentimental favorites he recorded to raise funds for the local Red Cross. "Singing is one of my hobbies," he says. While the gala reaped $140,000 in donations, campaigners found Wiranto's effort ironic since the beneficiaries included Timorese refugees. Indonesia's human rights commission has linked the general to violence inflicted in East Timor last year by pro-Jakarta militias, which forced thousands to flee west. (Gala organizers even screened a video of refugees in a West Timor camp guarded by militias.) Wiranto's next project may prove to be just as controversial: a book analyzing post-reformasi issues.

Extractions: Life just keeps getting better for Taiwanese director Ang Lee and not just because he got to hang out with starlet-of-the-moment Zhang Ziyi on his way to Hollywood's Golden Globe awards. By the end of the Jan. 21 evening, Lee, 46, had picked up the best-director trophy for his soulful martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The movie also took the best foreign-language film award. "I cannot tell you how surprised I am," said Lee, before thanking the cast and crew for enduring his film-inspired neuroticism. "I spent a whole year in China trying to find my roots and dealing with my childhood fantasy and midlife crisis." The director also thanked his wife, doctor Jane Lin , whom he acknowledged as the role model for Crouching Tiger's strong female characters. "Except, of course, for Jade Fox," Lee added smartly, referring to the movie's villain. Let's hope he gets the chance to think just as quickly when the Oscars roll around in March.

Some record company executive has obviously marched him into their study and told him to GET TRENDY, but the fashion shoot that accompanies this disc is preposterous. Included in The Look are a ridiculous pair of flares, a suit white enough for an FA Cup Final, and the same gormless stare that Ronaldo has when he models clothes. Given the hagiography that takes the place of sleeve notes, DG are obviously looking for major artist build, and are sparing no promotional effort. But I forgive him because he is a genius. Winner, at 19, of the last Warsaw Chopin Competition, the boy can obviously play a bit. He is building on that success by debuting with an all-Chopin recital that reveals an excellent technique and a beautiful touch. Apparently an admirer of Zimmerman, Yundi Li certainly achieves that great pianists thoughtful clarity and attention to detail, albeit at slightly less tardy tempos. From the opening arpeggiated chord of the Third Sonata, which forms the meat of this recital disc, his approach to the Chopin soundworld is apparent: clean no wash of pedal here thank you very much and constantly forward moving. It is a powerful performance that marks Yundi Li as a player of real technique and talent.

Extractions: Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Choir program also includes Bach, Beethoven By Jan Biles , Arts and Entertainment Editor Sunday, November 5, 2000 The Kansas University Symphony Orchestra has chosen the works of The Three B's Beethoven, Bach and Brahms for its next concert. Pianist Sequeira Costa will perform with the Kansas University Symphony Orchestra Friday night at the Lied Center. The concert will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Lied Center. Not only will compositions by those major composers be featured, but the concert also will include performances by the KU Chamber Choir, the Continuo Group and KU piano professor Sequeira Costa. Costa, an internationally known pianist and founder of the Lawrence-based Vianna Da Motta Music Foundation, will pair with the KU Symphony Orchestra for "Piano Concerto No. 2 in B Flat," by Johannes Brahms. Cellist Forrest Aubel will have a solo part in the work. "It is one of the most difficult and demanding (compositions) of the piano repertoire," Costa said. The work was first performed in November 1881, with Brahms as soloist. In the concert's program notes, Brian Priestman, director of the KU Symphony Orchestra, writes that the work is difficult to perform "not only because of its virtuosity, but also because the emotional, and indeed spiritual, insights of the music are complex to communicate. It has been said that it is the greatest of the 19th-century piano concertos outweighing even the first of Tchaikowsky's efforts in this form."
