Extractions: LOCAL piano wonder Li Yundi not only made Shenzhen proud by winning the prestigious Chopin Piano Competition last year; he also sparked a passion in the city for classical music, especially as interpreted by international soloists. Among these is Deng Thai Son, who was the first Asian winner of the Chopin competition back in 1980.

Extractions: Movies Dining/Food Local events Music ... Music By Richard Dyer, Globe Staff, 4/10/2004 Pianist Yundi Li isn't married, but he does wear a plain gold ring on one of his agile fingers. ADVERTISEMENT When he arrived in Salt Lake City in 1999 to participate in the Gina Bachauer Young Artists International Competition, his host family gave him the ring for good luck. Li won the competition, and he says he's never taken the ring off since. "It is my ring of power," he says, smiling, "just like in the movies." A year later, at the age of 18, he won the gold medal in the prestigious Chopin competition in Warsaw. The competition is held every five years, and in the previous two the jury had declined to award a first prize, so Li's honor was noted all over the pianistic community. It launched him on a world career, including a contract with Deutsche Grammophon, which has recorded him playing Chopin and Liszt composers that Li will play in his first Boston recital, tonight at 8 in Jordan Hall. Li's first two recordings document an unusual combination of brains and brawn, poetic temperament and romantic fire. Li came to Boston a few days early to practice and settle in. His promotional photographs give him a glam, androgynous Greta Garbo look; in person, he's more like a serious-minded math prodigy, and he's still wearing braces on his teeth. He knows what he's accomplished, but he also knows how long a journey lies ahead.

Extractions: Yundi Lis winning of the Chopin Piano Competition at Warsaw held in the year 2000 came only two weeks after his 18 th birthday, rightfully placing him the youngest ever to have won the first prize at Warsaw. He is a pianist who is always deeply immersed in the music he is playing, as anyone who has attended his concert would agree with me from his facial expression. He is able to feel the music so well that you always find his interpretation most agreeable. This Liszt album demonstrated Lis capability in deeply emotional playing. For Liszts Sonata in B Minor, I have heard Zimerman , Martha Argerich, Horowitz, Claudio Arrau, Sviatoslav Richter, Leslie Howard, Artur Rubinstein, Curzon, Georges Cziffra, Maurizio Pollini, Ivo Pogorelich, Mathieu Papadiamandis, Alfred Brendel and I must say that Li¡¯s playing is most emotional. His interpretative and technical power are shown not only from the way he played each theme of this sonata, but also from the smooth transitions he executed from one theme to another. For shorter pieces in this album, Lis strong romantic impulse are most exhilarating. Again, his technique is impeccable. I must agree that this is one album difficult to surpass.
Extractions: Yundi Li is certainly deserving of the 1st place award at the 14th International Chopin Competition. His performance is reminiscent of that of Maurizio Pollini who won 1st place in the same competition in 1960 at the age of 18. The Andante Spianato et Grand Polonaise in E-flat (Op. 22) is quite remarkable given the added pressure of performing in competition. Li is at ease with each piece and elicits both warmth and excitement from the keyboard. My only criticism of Lis playing is his overly dramatic movements at the piano. Another young Chinese pianist of prominence today, Lang Lang, is also known for flinging arms and near backflips off of the seat. The great Liszt too, was given to physical melodrama at the keyboard as is apparent from the many caricatures that exist of his performances. We know, however, that great playing can be achieved without the added physicality: Rachmaninov, Rubinstein, Arrau, Horowitz, and Hofmann are fine examples.

Extractions: I have been listening to Yundi Li's (or Li3Yun2Di2 for Chinese people) Liszt CD for a while now. Included in this all-Liszt recital is the Sonata in b minor, La Campanella, Liszt's Transcription of Schumann's Liebslied: Widmung, the oh-so-cheesy Liebstraum No. 3, Tarantella, and a transcription from Rigoletto. Li's rendition of the b minor is without a doubt one of the best I've ever heard, and could rapidly become my personal favorite. The emotional depth of the b minor is balanced out quite evenly by the other show pieces such as La Campanella. Besides the technical achievements of such a program (no small task), Li also excels at elegance. This elegance is perhaps most evident ,ironically, in La Campanella. There is real thinking here. I have never heard La Campanella played so convincingly in both an academic sense and a visceral sense. Structurally, all the B sections transform, one after another, from elegant, to assertive, to a torrent of explosive sound, giving the piece a kind of coherence which I've never heard. Li's dynamic and expressive range, while we're at it, may be his most impressive skill. In every piece, especially the b minor, he uses his full range to spectacular effect. Never a dull moment.

There isn't much I can say, except to praise him for the music he has played for us, and to praise God, for the tremendous gift with which He has blessed Yundi , that he may share it with us, in awe of God's generous beauty, that even those who do not know Him may experience and enjoy this beauty. Yundi Li is the 1st prize winner of the 2000 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw . Li's emergence from the competition caused a sensation in the musical world. Not only was he the first Chinese pianist to capture gold at the competition, but also he was the youngest ever. In the two previous competitions in 1990 and 1995, 1st place was not awarded because none of the competitors was considered good enough to share the same glory of the great competition winners in the past. Prior to that, Stanislov Bunin was the winner of the 1985 competition, already considered inferior to previous winners. Indeed, the judging system is extremely harsh, and the competition is the most competitive in the world. Take Vladimir Ashkenazy and Mitsuko Uchida for example. They would be well-deserving of a first prize in the competition, but there were superior competitors in their years, and they each captured second prize, with Adam

Yundi Li - Chopin Deutsche Grammophon - 1 CD 471.479-2
