Extractions: Hollywood had expressed interest in doing a biography of America's most influential modern composer ever since his untimely death in 1937, but it took eight years to finally get the story on the screen. Part of that time was consumed in legal affairs, obtaining the rights to the Gershwin musical library, but it was just as difficult coming up with a screenplay from a life that was notably devoid of conflict. If what they ended up with was a fiction with the Gershwin name attached, at least Rhapsody in Blue (1945) featured 22 of his greatest songs and excerpts from five of his instrumental pieces, performed by such noted Gershwin interpreters as pianist Oscar Levant, singers Al Jolson and Anne Brown and conductor Paul Whiteman. Various writers on the Warner Bros. lot labored over the story for years. When playwright Clifford Odets took over the project, he drove his fellow writers crazy playing recordings of Gershwin's music all day to get in the mood. The result was an 800-page screenplay about class struggle, featuring the young Gershwin's battle to rise from poverty to gain international acceptance as a composer. Most readers thought it was more about Odets than Gershwin, so Warners assigned another writer to the project and used portions of Odets' screenplay a year later for another picture with a musical background

By Peter G. Davis Left-handed complement:Ursula Oppens, with Dennis Russell Davies at Carnegie Hall. L etting go of the 1998 George Gershwin centenary is proving to be difficult, if forgivably so. There is still plenty to learn about this most popular of serious American composers, especially the exact nature of the scores he wrote for his many Broadway shows. The American Composers Orchestra 's recent tribute, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies in Carnegie Hall, wasn't able to go into that, but the music was choice and the context fascinating. This was not just another run-through of overplayed Gershwin concert classics but an attempt to locate the composer amid the music of three contemporaries who were both associates and admirers: Oscar Levant and Vernon Duke, who, like their mentor, traveled between high- and lowbrow circles with varying degrees of discomfort, and Maurice Ravel, a fastidious classicist whose symbiotic relationship with Gershwin has yet to be properly studied.

For instance, the ''Nights With Oscar'' concerts on March 5 and 12 took on an entirely new meaning as the story of a human Oscar nearly upstaged the famed golden statuettes. One of each evening's highlights was a film clip from ''An American in Paris'' featuring Oscar Levant. The pianist is playing Gershwin's Concerto in F and, in the scene, fantasizes that he is not only the soloist, but the conductor, the string section, the tympanist, several other orchestra members and, ultimately, the appreciative audience shouting ''Bravo!'' It is a very funny scene and we on stage were enjoying it as much as the audience. I was sitting very close to the string section and caught the eye of Don Gibson, who told me Levant had once performed that very concerto with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and had created a storm of controversy. Of course, I was intrigued and, after the concert, Don promised to bring me a part of Levant's biography dealing with the incident. The young conductor who did such a fine job leading the Cincinnati Pops through the minefield of time-critical motion picture soundtracks, John Morris Russell, was drawn into the conversation, too. He was as interested as I. And why not? Oscar Levant was one of those personalities whose towering talent is rivaled by an equally towering eccentricity.
