Extractions: Hollywood had expressed interest in doing a biography of America's most influential modern composer ever since his untimely death in 1937, but it took eight years to finally get the story on the screen. Part of that time was consumed in legal affairs, obtaining the rights to the Gershwin musical library, but it was just as difficult coming up with a screenplay from a life that was notably devoid of conflict. If what they ended up with was a fiction with the Gershwin name attached, at least Rhapsody in Blue (1945) featured 22 of his greatest songs and excerpts from five of his instrumental pieces, performed by such noted Gershwin interpreters as pianist Oscar Levant, singers Al Jolson and Anne Brown and conductor Paul Whiteman. Various writers on the Warner Bros. lot labored over the story for years. When playwright Clifford Odets took over the project, he drove his fellow writers crazy playing recordings of Gershwin's music all day to get in the mood. The result was an 800-page screenplay about class struggle, featuring the young Gershwin's battle to rise from poverty to gain international acceptance as a composer. Most readers thought it was more about Odets than Gershwin, so Warners assigned another writer to the project and used portions of Odets' screenplay a year later for another picture with a musical background

Oscar Levant, the legendary concert pianist and wit of books, movies and American TV panel shows, always left everybody laughing at his dry, acerbic wit which put down everybody and mostly himself. What was good for the goose was good for the gander. Levant, a lawyer, threatened to sue Chuck Strahl, then an Alliance MP, for disparaging comments. But its not in the courts that Ezra Levant has made his mark. It is in politics that hes unique and a rising star. To be so charismatic and to be so Jewish in Calgary is a tale worth exploring in some depth. Alberta was not always hospitable to members of what John Diefenbaker always called the Hebraic Persuasion. A dislike of Jews and a belief in an international Jewish banking conspiracy were staples of Social Credit theory as practised by premiers Bible Bill Aberhart and Ernest Manning, Prestons father. Edith Gostick, a Calgary Social Credit member, was an avowed anti-Semite; her son Ron was for many years the publisher of the anti-Semitic Canadian Intelligence Service.

By Peter G. Davis Left-handed complement:Ursula Oppens, with Dennis Russell Davies at Carnegie Hall. L etting go of the 1998 George Gershwin centenary is proving to be difficult, if forgivably so. There is still plenty to learn about this most popular of serious American composers, especially the exact nature of the scores he wrote for his many Broadway shows. The American Composers Orchestra 's recent tribute, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies in Carnegie Hall, wasn't able to go into that, but the music was choice and the context fascinating. This was not just another run-through of overplayed Gershwin concert classics but an attempt to locate the composer amid the music of three contemporaries who were both associates and admirers: Oscar Levant and Vernon Duke, who, like their mentor, traveled between high- and lowbrow circles with varying degrees of discomfort, and Maurice Ravel, a fastidious classicist whose symbiotic relationship with Gershwin has yet to be properly studied.

Richard Glazier, piano; Centaur CRC 2486. 63'31". American concert pianist Richard Glazier has a special affection for the Gershwin songbook he's loved American musicals from an early age and he communicates that in this program of 15 tunes, 10 of which are versions by arrangers like the recently renowned Artis Wodehose she masterminded Nonesuch's two piano roll CDs of Gershwin materialMaurice C. Whitney, and MGM house arranger Saul Chaplin (he performed those duties in the film of The Sound Of Music (1965).) Glazier evokes a perfect period feel in each number when that's called for especially in the first few and that's a large part of their charm, though his most impressive "interpretations" come in the "stylized by Stan Freeman" ones which are in the modern jazz idiom, and in Gershwin's "Jazzbo Brown Blues" which the composer originally intended as a solo piano opening to his folk opera Porgy and Bess (1934) its director Rouben Mamoulian (1898-1987), who helmed many famous Hollywood films includiing Garbo's

Extractions: Oscar Levant was both a pianist and an actor , better known for his character than music . He was born on December 27 to a musical family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Levant moved to New York with his mother in after the death of his father. He began studying under Zygmunt Stojowski, a well established piano pedagogue. In 1928 Levant traveled to Hollywood where his career turned for the better. During his stay, he met and befriended George Gershwin Around Levant began composing on a serious note. This led to a request by Aaron Copland to play at the Yaddo Festival of contemporary American music on April 30 of that year. Successful, Levant began on a new orchestral work, Sinfonietta During the years of and , Oscar Levant syndicated his own talk show, The Oscar Levant Show . The show was highly controversial, finally being taken from the air after a comment in regards to Marilyn Monroe ; 'Now that Marilyn Monroe is kosher, Arthur Miller can eat her.' He later refuted he "hadn't meant it THAT way." Several months later, the show was rebroadcasted in a slightly revised format. The show was now taped to use as a buffer to Oscar's antics. This however, failed to prevent Oscar from making some comments of

Extractions: School Links Column by Nick Clooney Visits with the Cincinnati Pops are always adventures. For instance, the ''Nights With Oscar'' concerts on March 5 and 12 took on an entirely new meaning as the story of a human Oscar nearly upstaged the famed golden statuettes. One of each evening's highlights was a film clip from ''An American in Paris'' featuring Oscar Levant. The pianist is playing Gershwin's Concerto in F and, in the scene, fantasizes that he is not only the soloist, but the conductor, the string section, the tympanist, several other orchestra members and, ultimately, the appreciative audience shouting ''Bravo!'' It is a very funny scene and we on stage were enjoying it as much as the audience. I was sitting very close to the string section and caught the eye of Don Gibson, who told me Levant had once performed that very concerto with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and had created a storm of controversy. Of course, I was intrigued and, after the concert, Don promised to bring me a part of Levant's biography dealing with the incident. The young conductor who did such a fine job leading the Cincinnati Pops through the minefield of time-critical motion picture soundtracks, John Morris Russell, was drawn into the conversation, too. He was as interested as I. And why not? Oscar Levant was one of those personalities whose towering talent is rivaled by an equally towering eccentricity.
