Extractions: A thrilling, suspenseful film and Louis Malle's directorial debut . An executive in love with his employer's wife devises the perfect murder. After killing his boss, he is trapped in an elevator while his mistress wanders the streets of Paris in search of her lover. 1958. 90 min. B/W Subtitled. Directed by Louis Malle. Script: Louis Malle, Roger Nimier, based on a novel by Noel Calef. Cast: Maurice Ronet, Jeanne Moreau, Yori Bertin, Georges Poujouly, Lino Ventura. L'ATALANTE Anna Karina enlists the aid of two male hoods to swipe her aunt's stash, but as usual the supposed plot is only a jumping-off point for Godard's commentary on Hollywood melodramas and other twentieth-century artifacts. Among the more entertaining of the director's output; looks delightfully mellow today.1964. 97 min. B/W subtitled. Directed by Jean-Luc Godard. Script: Jean-Luc Godard, based on FOOL'S GOLD by Dolores Hitchens. Cast: Anna Karina, Sami Frey. LES BAS-FONDS Jean Renoir's version of the Maxim Gorky play features those two magnetic poles of French acting: Louis Jouvet as the gambling baron who sinks to living in a flophouse, and Jean Gabin as the thief trying to climb up to a different life. Their scenes together are gems of the French film tradition. The fine cast includes Le Vigan as an actor, Jany Holt as a prostitute with aspirations toward love with sentiment, and Junie Astor, Suzy Prim, and Vladimir Sokoloff. This movie has one of those emblematic moments that people talk about for years afterward: Jouvet, having lost everything, comes away from the gaming tables and can't light his cigarette. This scene was, for the 30s, what Belmondo rubbing his lips in BREATHLESS was for the 60s. 1936. 92 min. B/W Subtitled. Directed by Jean Renoir. Script: Jean Renoir, Charles Spaak, J. Companeez, E. Zamiatine.

Extractions: "Takako Nishizaki seems to have the technique for this demanding music, and Alfred Walter and his plucky band supply estimable support. It is difficult not to be enthusiastic about this release; it's a welcome introduction to a little-known composer." - Haller, American Record Guide, May/June 2003 COPLAND: Appalachian Spring "This is the latest addition to the splendid series of American Classics brought out by Naxos, which cleverly combines very well known works with rarities. While in Acapulco in the late 1950s Copland wrote two short works Mexican Landscape and Dance of Jalisco, and some years later added Estribillo to make up his Three Latin American Sketches. They make for pleasant listening and are not dissimilar in parts to his El Salon Mexico. Quiet City, on the other hand, written as accidental music to a play, is more the Copland we know." - Nick Bailey, Classic FM, April 2003

Extractions: "This is the third release in Naxos' survey of Barber's orchestral music, a series that goes from strength to strength. Marin Alsop, now music director of Andrew Litton's former orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony in England, has the Scottish orchestra playing with brilliance and suppleness, and the recorded sound is clear and open. Especially welcome indeed, revelatory - is Stephen Prutsman's performance of the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1962 Piano Concerto. Audibly inspired by Prokofiev and Ravel, the work was conceived for and long associated with the American pianist John Browning, who died Jan. 2. Mr. Prutsman's is a more "modern" performance, if you will - tauter, more sinewy, but still beautifully shapely." - Scott Cantrell, Dallas Morning News, February 2, 2003

Extractions: Home January 2004 January 2003 January 2002 ... December 1997 The Romantic Piano Concerto - 34 This month, we offer over a dozen items on the new VMS label from Austria. This label is run by the same man, Dieter Heuler, who founded and operated Schwann (and, then, KOCH Schwann) for its entire existence before it was bought by Universal Classics last year and wound up. Its close resemblance to Schwann will be a welcome sight to many collectors and we hope that it will continue along Schwann's path with its own productions soon (for now, it is releasing previously unissued material from various sources). In addition, we offer 10 to 15 Divox titles - most of which are pre-1997 and which are here for customers who may not have had access to them before (Divox has not had U.S. distribution for at least 4 years now.) We offer you our best wishes for the holiday season and let's all hope that the economy improves in 2004 and enables Records International to keep offering the kind of repertoire which is so increasingly hard to find out there! www.recordsinternational.com e-mail: sales@recordsinternational.com

Extractions: I survived the bombing of Warsaw and the Cracow Ghetto and I wanted to recreate those childhood visions. It was also important for me to stick as close to the truth as possible and avoid Hollywood-style make-believe. I have never done, and don't intend to do, anything autobiographical, but making THE PIANIST I could use the experiences I went through. While visiting Cracow scouting for locations, my childhood memories resurfaced. What I felt, walking along the streets of the former Ghetto, proved that I couldn't shoot the film in Cracow. In addition to my own recollections, I could rely on the authenticity of Szpilman's account. He wrote it just after the war perhaps that's why the story is so strong, so genuine, and so fresh. He describes the reality of this period with surprising almost cool and scientific objectivity. There are decent Poles and evil Poles in his book, decent and evil Jews, decent and evil Germans.

Extractions: Our Netflix Wish List Ratings? Sorted By: Title DVDs in Collection: 57 Page # 1 21 Grams Drama R Length: 125 26 Dec 2003 Universal Studios Sean Penn and Benecio Del Toro, two of the most gripping actors around, play wildly different men linked through a grieving woman (Naomi Watts, Mulholland Drive, The Ring) in 21 Grams. Del Toro (Traffic, The Usual Suspects) delves deep into the role of an ex-con turned born-again Christian, a deeply conflicted man struggling to set right a terrible accident, even at the expense of his family. Penn (Mystic River, Dead Man Walking) captures a cynical, philandering professor in dire need of a heart transplant, which he gets from the death of Watts' husband. 21 Grams slips back in forth in time, creating an intricate emotional web out of the past and the present that slowly draws these three together; the result is remarkably fluid and compelling. The movie overreaches for metaphors towards the end, but that doesn't erase the power of the deeply felt performances. Bret Fetzer
