Chopin held strong views about the performance of his music, and the directions he left in his manuscripts are so specific that its astonishing how far modern performance practice has departed from the stated intentions of Chopin . Most Chopin pianists over-dramatise the music of Chopin playing too loudly and too fast, with scant attention to inappropriate pedalling. Extractions: GORDON RUMSON writes: Sometimes one finds magic. I did when I went to this site. Within a few seconds of the first sounds I knew I was in the world created by a real composer. Atmospheric but constructed with inner steel, Mats Wendt is clearly doing something special: music of mystery, enchantment and great beauty. Here is something extraordinary. I can't say I've listened to all 158 sections (which starts at number five because the first four are not complete yet) of this Norse cosmological 'suite' and without a menu for all of the sections I'm a little mystified at where it's going. The site itself is graphic intensive and not terribly intuitive (some menus are hidden behind the graphics, and there's little way to know which ones) but the music makes it worthwhile. Hats off... http://w1.455.telia.com/~u45503396/elvsmith/index.html Chopin is at the core of the repertoire for the piano. His music, while almost exclusively for that instrument yet reaches to cosmic realms. He is one of the greatest masters of music. UK pianist Angela Lear has spent 30 years in a study of Chopin and the results of her endeavors are available on CD and at this web site, where thankfully, we can hear entire selections. Her performance of the famous Nocturne in E flat is fascinating for the embellishments (all authentic) that she adds. I listened to the Scherzo in C sharp minor with a knowing ear (as this used to be in my repertoire) and I can tell you she plays it very well. Steely octaves and glittering passage work, Angela Lear can clearly play the piano at a very high level. Keep an eye on

Extractions: The intimate and poetic nature of Chopin's music naturally lends itself to very personalized interpretations of the music by pianists - arguably more so than any other composer. This fact has resulted in recordings of Chopin's repertoire which vary dramatically from artist to artist, based on the particular interpretation of the pianist. It has also fostered a one hundred and fifty year old debate over just how to interpret Chopin's music. When we listen to a recording of Chopin's music, are we hearing the music as Chopin intended, or are we hearing how that particular pianist "reads" the music? Are we hearing Chopin or the artist who is playing his music? Does it matter? Surely it does. How an artist enunciates a particular phrase of the music affects its meaning - just as in human speech. This fact is particularly relevant to Chopin's music because it is so lyrical, poetic, and even narrative at times. Is a particular Mazurka, for example, a whimsical trifle or a solemn tone-poem? The answer is, usually, what the individual playing it thinks it is. Given the wide-ranging interpretations of Chopin's music in the form of recordings, we have the opportunity to seek out the "best" Chopin - "who does the best Preludes", "who does the best Ballades", etc. There are piano competitions which try to answer the question, "Who plays Chopin the best?" But what about the question, "How did Chopin want his music played?" - which ultimately begs the question, "What did Chopin mean - what was he saying?"

Extractions: 2 Gordon Rumson BRAVE HEART listen 0:00-0:37 ]. Perhaps also she does not have the highest level of poetic sensibilities such as Emil Gilels (who does?), but Lear is capable of lyricism, heroism, fancy and delight in splendid quantity. I say this and say it in this way because Lear has put herself forward in the arena of Chopin performance and placed herself at odds with virtually the entire general tradition of Chopin interpretation. This is a dangerous thing to have done. It will not do to compare her with some giant, find her wanting and then denigrate her researches and findings. She deserves a fair hearing judged upon her own merits, capacities and contributions. Therefore, let me repeat, Angela Lear is an excellent pianist and musician. The current approach with the Chopin Etudes is to play them as gigantic tournaments of pianistic virtuosity (and even Lear believes they occupy the highest summit though I think they do not) with fantastic vehemence and absolute clarity of the notes. Edmund Burke, that sad conservative who did not fully grasp his own thoughts, rightly understood that the obscure, the veiled and the unclear could actually have a more profound impact than the plain and precise. As he stands at the onset of Romanticism in poetry and music, his observations may indeed have been borne out by the music of Chopin.
