Extractions: My guide to the recordings of Bix Beiderbecke and Jelly Roll Morton in my teens was Mikael Ankers . We met in high scool and spent endless sessions listening to his 78's collection which seemed to increase every day. He played the piano (among other instruments) and was also a good arranger and managed to come to work for record collector Ray Avery one summer in California in the 60's, where he met some of his idols from the Bob Crosby's Orchestra, i.e. Matty Matlock and Eddie Miller. In 1968 Stockholm Stompers , was started in with Ulf Dreber, who played the clarinet in a way reminding of Edmond Hall. We recorded on Kenneth Records and one of the tunes - "Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives To Me" included a bopchorus I had composed. After this heretical attempt into modern music I decided to concentrate on

Extractions: The band formed in Atlanta in 1984 by Tommy Dean and Bruce Hampton cohort, Billy McPhersen Tommy Dean Mike Ewbank Earl Ford Randy Hunter has played saxophone with Cab Calloway, Duffie Jackson Band (of Count Basie's Band), Bob Crosby and the Bobcats, the Larry Elkhart "Hooked on Swing" Orchestra, and the Modernaires of the Glen Miller Orchestra (on the Mississippi Queen). He studied music at Valdosta State College. He and Ted are constantly creating "head charts" for on the fly arrangements of tunes from the immense League library. Ted and Randy have known each other since they were childhood friends. As father of five, Randy looks forward to getting out on the road with a bunch of other large, sweaty men to travel hundreds of miles in some over-sized motor vehicle and play another gig. Ted Dortch Jean-Marc Porson , from the D.C. area, has worked in Los Angeles, California, the D.C. area and the Southeast. He has played bass with Bill Sheffield, Lotsa Poppa, Sandra Hall, Francine Reed, St. Clair Pinckney, Red Dog, David Ragsdale (of Kansas), and Tinsley Ellis before landing with the League. John's voice adds an exciting texture to the band. John is the only son of parents who worked in the U.S. diplomatic corps. This has made him a most civil and polite individual. Underneath his charming exterior lurks the surly, willful delinquent who spent a number of years in reform school. Don't be fooled.

Extractions: New book from Broadway/Doubleday Publication May 03 It has been over twenty years since the publication of The Inner Game of Music The Mastery of Music, Ten Pathways to True Artistry I must confess, I learned so much from my interviews with cellists on this topic that it has dramatically changed the way I play my bass. It started with Casals when he said that passion comes from what we learn from love love of nature, of music and of man. Most cellists I spoke with were are reluctant to even discuss passion without balancing the emotion with some kind of perspective. Having personally studied with cellist Janos Starker and after speaking with Carter Brey, it is clear to these artists that the pathway to expression from the soul is through discipline. Discipline is a pathway to liberate the spirit but without technique Starker said:, all your idealism is for zilch.

Extractions: Grammy Awards - Nominees Welcome to our coverage of the 46th Annual Grammy Awards. Dangerously in Love Ellen Degeneres is on next to talk about the 40th anniversary of The Beatles landing in the U.S. She then intro'd a tribute performance by Dave Matthews, Vince Gill, Sting and Pharrell Williams who perform "I Saw Her Standing There". Queen Latifah takes the stage next to introduce Christina Aguilera and her song "Beautiful". I think this is the most amount of clothes I've seen her wearing in years. John Mayer and Matthew Perry riff on the fact that their category, Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, has no duos in it before they present the Grammy to No Doubt for "Underneath It All". Beck then introduces a performance by the White Stripes. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below CSI Amber Tamblyn, Amy Lee and Jakob Dylan paid tribute to the songwriting team of Goffen and King before presenting the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance to Justin Timberlake for "Cry Me A River". He said he was humbled to be in the company of the other nominees and also spent a moment apologizing for the whole Janet Jackson breast-baring at the Super Bowl half-time show. Patti LaBelle paid tribute to her friend Luther Vandross before introuducing a tribute performance by Alicia Keys, Celine Dion and Richard Marx. The Dion/Marx performance of Luther's "Dance With My Father" was marred by terrible audio problems at the beginning. Ahh, live television.

Extractions: Station Information ... Highlights for On This Date... As radio continued to shine with the glow of its Golden Age, in the late 1930s, Indiana University significantly broadened the number of opportunities for students in radio production. While the ability to expose students to genuine hands-on experience in radio could not be realized without a station broadcasting from the IU campus, in the years preceding WFIU's first broadcast in 1950, students and faculty produced numerous radio programs for national and international distribution. These projects and activities prepared a fertile ground for the station's eventual fruition and cultivation. In this edition of Directions in Sound, Catherine Smith offers some remembrances of radio at IU in the 1940s [see facing page]. Many productions were created by faculty and students during this period on campus. In addition to the discussion-oriented, theater, and music programs referenced by Smith, from 1937 through the fifties, students produced the Indiana School of the Sky, a weekday, fifteen-minute educational supplement for elementary and high school classrooms, carried by stations throughout the state. IU radio productions were even heard overseas; short-wave foreign language programs written and produced by foreign students, faculty members, and visitors were broadcast to Latin America, Europe, and Asia.
