Extractions: Training students to sing with musical accuracy is critical and can be developed through careful repertoire selection. The three best genres for advancing accurate singing are Baroque music, contemporary music, and canonic materials. Baroque Music Concentrate Sing note sequences (including octaves) Analyze motives and phrase repetitions Evaluate motivic differences Identify note direction and progression Sing feminine and masculine phrase shapes Sing uniform vowels over many notes (melismas) Identify repeated notes in the melody Study different rhythmic values When choosing pieces from the Baroque period: Look at the Oratorios and cantatas of some of the great Baroque composers; they can be wonderful resources for children. Check collections in your local music school or music research library for reliable editions. There are many editions available of Baroque scores that are appropriate with a middle school chorus. It is important that you research what the various editors have done to this music. Often keys will be changed, arias shortened, etc. Most are accompanied by harpsichord and cello continuo or orchestra and are edited from opera or oratorio. Research or knowledge is the key in selecting an edition.

The Liszt Sonata in B minor seemed to fly by, interesting in itself but merely a good performance. He led me to believe DG would be amenable to this. Hout , for sax, marimba, guitar and piano from 1991, was clever and cute, though not deep, with its jazz-like sax riffs and honks. Pacifica competed for this coveted post against several other outstanding ensembles in May 2002. The quartet is honored to receive this appointment and participate in the continuing tradition of chamber music excellence at The Chamber Music Society. The Pacifica Quartet has been appointed to the faculty of the University of Illinois School of Music. As part of their residency, they will appear in a three-concert series at the Krannert Center. The Pacifica will continue as artist-in-residence ensemble at the University of Chicago. Why We Play the Carter Cycle Always dealing first and foremost with the human experience, these five quartets are full of vitality, passion, and unique musical vision. The music not only portrays many of our deepest emotions, but goes a step beyond by showing representations of the processes by which we think and feel, from the dreamlike state of the First quartet expressing how our ideas are formed by subconsciously connecting one thought to the next, to the musical representation of very human connections of confrontation, discipleship, and companionship in the Second. Then comes the Third, two duos on stage playing what seem to be completely different pieces of music. At the beginning of the piece, one only hears chaos. However, as the piece progresses we realize that the focus gradually becomes the connections and relationships between these duos.

I cited published sources from Pablo Cassals, Jaqueline DuPre, William Pleeth, Yo-Yo Ma and others. With the help of my friend Tim Janoff, I was able to use several excerpts from his wonderful internet interviews with artists such as Lynn Harrell and others. Think about this for a moment. Are we missing something in our musical training? Are we neglecting to give our students and ourselves the very skills that are truly necessary in order to achieve excellence and respect, and to make a lasting contribution on Earth? Is it possible that just mastering our instruments and our Zen-like states of concentration isn't ALL that is necessary to negotiate some very important things in our life and work? Recognizing this missing link was the first inspiration that sent me exploring this fascinating landscape of excellence and artistry. It sent me down a new pathway, filled with questions and curiosity. I then came up with ten Pathways that I felt would begin the journey. Soon I realized that the real message of this journey is endless and it doesnt really stop at these ten qualities. It only begins with ten. There is the expression, "The Joy is in the Journey." This works for me.
