Extractions: by Allan Pulker Overview Here are some October highlights: a week at a time. Early Birds: October 1-7 With October, the music season is well under way. I count 21 concerts in the first four days of October, alone, including eight midday events at seven different venues. The St. Lawrence String Quartet on October 4 at the Jane Mallett Theatre (last month's cover story) and Les Amis at the Heliconian Hall on October 6 have two interesting overlaps violinist Barry Shiffman and composer, Jonathan Berger. Shiffman, the second violinist in the St. Lawrence, plays the viola in the Oct 6 concert; Jonathan Berger has a work on the Oct 4 program, and then features as a "recreator" Oct 6. Based on a wax cylinder of Johannes Brahms himself playing the first seventeen bars of his First Hungarian Dance, Berger has created a "Disk-Klavier" reproduction of "what Brahms would have sounded like playing the whole thing." The next best thing to time travel! (And speaking of time travel, Oct 5 Sir Andrew Davis will conduct the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.) The first few days of the month are particularly bountiful at the U of T: Oct 1, the

Extractions: Destination Exeter, Continued The week before, as part of an exhibition of Japanese ceramics at the Academy's Lamont Gallery, students had the opportunity to participate in a traditional chabako tea ceremony, performed by Hiroko Seno, mother of Katie Seno '03. In January, the acclaimed Austrian piano duo of Eduard and Johannes Kutrowatz returned to campus, courtesy of the Gilbert Concert Series, for a week of master classes and concerts, including a combined performance with the Academy's chamber orchestra. Their January 28 recital, an evening of music by Rachmaninoff, Arvo Prt and George Gershwin among others, was made memorable when a brief power failure plunged Phillips Church into darkness; nonplussed, the brothers continued their concert by candlelight, to the awe and delight of their audience. Their music illuminated not only the church, butÑlike the words and ideas of our other winter guestsÑthe entire campus as well. Finding Comfort in Tea Hiroko Seno began learning the "way of tea" in 1982. In time, she inherited a tea box, or chabako, from her husband's grandmother. The tea box contains utensils that permit a traditional Japanese tea service to be performed in any setting. It was this box that SenoÑwhose daughter, Katie, is a seniorÑlovingly set upon a table in Art Studio A, prior to demonstrating a chabako tea ceremony here at Exeter in January.

Extractions: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 10:00:27 +1000 http://www.duokutrowatz.com/English/english.html I meant to ask one other question. My recollection is that the ideal angle leaving the capo section up to the counterbearing bar is 17 degrees. I'm not sure why that number sticks in my headI may have gotten it from a piece that Ron Overs wrote, or I may be mistaken entirely. What is the maximum angle in the capo section that you can get without risking breaking strings. I would assume the materials would make a difference too. In the capo section where the strings bear against cast iron, I would assume that they would tolerate less of an angle than where the strings where redirected by softer brass agraffes. http://overspianos.com.au mailto: info@overspianos.com.au http://www.ptg.org/pipermail/pianotech/attachments/60/87/ea/db/attachment.htm multipart/alternative attachment Previous message: Knabe counterbearing arrangement Next message: Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ]

Extractions: Home January 2001 January 2000 January 1999 ... December 1997 Heitor Villa-Lobos SYMPHONY NO. 10 AMERINDIA ERNEST BLOCH (1880-1959): Macbeth. Previously only two very impressive, highly dramatic interludes from this opera were available on CD; but, here's the whole work, and it's just stunning. Sung in French, this is a powerful drama written when Bloch was only in his 20s. Both German and French influences are present in that Bloch uses leitmotifs, and the music can even sound impressionistic at times. Underlying all this are the familiar Jewish elements that would eventually dominate his style. No English text or libretto are supplied, but who needs them with music as demonstrative as this, and a story as familiar as Macbeth. French notes and libretto. 2 CDs. Jean-Philippe Lafont (baritone), Markella Hatziano (mezzo), Latvian Radio Choir, Montpellier Languedoc-Roussillon Philharmonic Orchestra; Freidemann Layer. Actes Sud AT 34100 (France) CHARLES KOECHLIN (1867-1950): Le Livre de la Jungle. The composer spent almost a third of his life working on the various pieces which make up "The Jungle Book" - three songs for soloists, chorus and orchestra and four tone-poems of very varied length. This is only the second recording of the complete work (the Marco Polo omits the songs) and was captured live in 1998 and is already the only one available, due to the deletion of the RCA with David Zinman (to say nothing of the deletion of the whole RCA classical label...). This probably won't stay around long either so, if you don't know this distinctly individual, boldly forward-looking music with great dramatic sense, don't hesitate too long! 2 CDs. French texts. Iris Vermillion (mezzo), Jacque Trussel (tenor), Vincent Le Texier (baritone), Montpellier Opera Chorus, Montpellier Languedoc-Roussillon Philharmonic Orchestra; Steuart Bedford. Extractions: Festival Coordinator, Hartmut Boedefeld, said he was very pleased with the attendance and that the audiences had been delighted by the performances of the leading musicians from across the globe. The highlight of the Festival was the first performances in Australia by acclaimed duo pianists Eduard and Johannes Kutrowatz from Vienna. The audience was delighted by the exceptional performance of these world-renowned pianist brothers at the Middle Creek Cattle Shed in Oberon on an imported Bösendorfer 3 meter Imperial Grand Piano. Another highlight of the Festival was the concert held at Marble Hall at St Stanislaus College in Bathurst where the performance of Schuberts Trout was said by some to be the best rendition they had heard. The Festival was made possible through the widespread support of the Friends of the Festival 2001 as well as a grant from the New South Wales Government, Ministry for the Arts; the Austrian Government who brought the Kutrowatz duo from Austria to Australia and the Bösendorfer Piano Fabrik GmbH, Vienna who supplied the grand piano.
