Extractions: review of some of his music from Free Reed Review "The Canadian composer Walter Buczynski composed Fantasy on Themes of the Past in five movements: 1) Old Polish Folk Airs, 2) Tango, 3) Fast Fingers, 4) Waltz and 5) Square Steady Beat. Due to my Polish heritage I recognized some of the tunes in the first movement, although I must admit that Buczynski (Polish also, I presume) surprised me with his humorous treatment; parts of the piece are really funny. The third movement utilizes some great jazz riffs and progressions and the waltz contains some quotes from popular Strauss waltzes. Buczynski very cleverly utilizes the free-bass left-hand manual for the serious sections, and utilizes the stradella left-hand manual for the more humorous sections (more fuel for my theory that the stradella accordion is often used by composers as a joki ng comedian). The final movement, Square Steady Beat, caught my ear immediately with its dynamic all-pervasive low string-bass ostinato on the down beat contrasted with the high violin pizzicato ostinato on the upbeats, not unlike a contemporary rock bas s and drum beat. It's just as impressive-sounding today. Moravec and the excellent Martin Turnovsky seem to have given this great music an intense reexamination. They play it with attention to every detail, making it sound as though it were a new piece. Frequently you will hear details pointed out in illuminating ways, but never at the expense of musical continuity. This performance is a revelation. Although Moravec's conception of the Variations is a bit outsize, his playing of the solo works is equally convincing. The mid-60s recordings sound excellent. Leslie Gerber Average customer rating:

The Arts The Uxbridge Chamber Choir Formed in 1983 under the direction of Thomas Baker, the Uxbridge Chamber Choir is a highly regarded ensemble of 20-30 mixed adult voices. The choir presents three or four concerts per season, incorporating a varied repertoire ranging from early to modern compositions, including folk songs, madrigals and sacred works. The choir is often joined by members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and other featured performers. The choir participates in the annual Uxbridge Celebration of the Arts and other community events. It engages in its own fund-raising events such as an annual performance by renowned pianist Antonin Kubalek. In 1997, the choir represented Ontario at the Cabot 500 Anniversary choir festival at St. John's, Newfoundland. The choir auditions annually in late August or early September.
