Extractions: Smart, topical, edgy, and full of New York rhythm and acoustical snap, Reich's "City Life" (1995) evokes all of New York, from the Bronx to Brooklyn and not just Manhattan's upper East side and the unresolved existential anxieties of a hand-full of successful intellectuals. The upbeat and vibrant snapshot soon turns grim, however, as Reich's heavy hand delves deeper into the city's dense, sordid, psychic slush. Only the silence at the close of the work brings relief. "Proverb" (1995-1996) - for six voices and percussion - takes its inspiration from 12th century French organa while "Nagoya Marimbas" (1994) is a rich and virtuoso instrumental work that harks back to Reich's work a few decades earlier, and is often reminiscent of the work of Ghanaian composer Nana Danso Abiam. Extractions: By a huge margin, the National Theatre in Praha (Prague) has the best acoustics of the five venues I sampled. I never thought I'd see these words in cold print but forget Vienna, forget Luzern, and especially forget the Met. This is it. I would be happy to sit here for hours' just listening to the orchestra tuning up, so gorgeous is the sound. The first thing I heard as I entered was the harps tuning up. Each note was a liquid drop of golden sound. There is such a bloom to the acoustic in this auditorium. It is as if each note were floating on its own acoustic pillow. This theatre treasures and coddles every note with perfect clarity. There is no muddiness at all. All the different threads in the music can be heard separately and yet in such full richness of tone. When the bassoon started practicing it sounded as if he were playing an instrument the size of a young sequoia. What a huge tone so loud and so woody. The only drawback of seeing a ballet is that I was unable to judge how singers would have projected from the stage. Oh well, guess I'll just have to come back and check it out. It's a tough assignment but someone's got to do it.

He is one of the most dynamic, precise, and intelligent of young conductors I have heard." Zsolt Hamar was born in Budapest and began his piano study at age 6. At the early age of 14 he studied composing at the Bela Bartok Conservatory in Budapest. He graduated with "First Class Honor" as a composer in 1994 In the final years there, he also took up conducting for which he again was awarded "First Class Honor" for conducting in 1995. As a composer, he won Third Prize of the Zoltan Kodaly Composer Competition in Hungary in 1990, and was subsequently commissioned to compose new works by the Zoltan Kodaly State Foundation. In 1995 Zsolt Hamar won the Second Prize, the Publics Award, and the Best Bartok Performers Prize in the very popular Hungarian Televisions International Conductors Competition "In memory of Janos Ferencsik". Since then, his career as conductor has been confirmed. Consequently, conducting engagements in Hungary and in Europe followed for which he received high acclaim by critics and audiences alike. In 1995 Mr. Hamar worked with Tamas Vasary and lead the Youth Symphony Orchestra of the Hungarian Radio and Television. He also conducted the Gala Concert of the World Music Day when he collaborated with late Sir Yehudi Menuhin.

Extractions: Special to The Post and Courier The Hungarian Philharmonic, courtesy of the Charleston Concert Association, brought a fine Old World sound and color to its concert at Gaillard last week. Just seeing that long list of Hungarian names was assuring, not to mention the sight of all those horns and double basses. This was music-making full of warmth and precision, and for once the program made no apologies for playing music the orchestra and the musicians know best. (This is no small matter. Remember the Russian orchestra that arrived at Gaillard not long ago with a program of ... I kid you not ... Italian opera?) Moreover, the conductor of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra (its full title) is Zoltan Kocsis. I have been collecting recordings of Mr. Kocsis for a number of years, since he is currently the choice pianist for Bartok's music. His name, by the way, is pronounced Coach-ish, and a Hungarian contact says it comes from the Hungarian word for "coach" and translates as "coach driver." Mr. Kocsis has recorded virtually everything Bartok wrote for the piano, and a large amount of Bach as well. I have not heard his performances of Franz Liszt's music, but I have no reason to expect it to be anything other than splendid. After all, both Liszt and Kocsis are Hungarian, and Mr. Kocsis teaches at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.

Under the direction of founding conductor Ivan Fischer, the orchestra will perform two of Igor Stravinsky's famous ballet scores, the 1919 version of the "Firebird Suite" and "Jeu de cartes." Schiff will be featured in performances of Bartok's second and third piano concertos, which he performed on acclaimed 1996 recordings with the Budapest Festival Orchestra on the Teldec label. Schiff, a native of Budapest, is Hungary's best known classical pianist, recognized worldwide for his thoughtful and inspired interpretations of Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Bartok. He was the New York Philharmonic's Artist-in-Residence for the 1997-98 season. A two-time Grammy Award winner, Schiff has also won England's Gramophone Award, Italy's Premio Abbiati, the 1991 Bartok Prize, "Instrumentalist of the Year" in the International Classical Music Awards, and the inaugural Claudio Arrau Memorial Medal from the Robert Schumann Society. In 1996 he was honored with Hungary's highest distinction, the Kossuth Prize. Schiff's discography now totals nearly 75 releases.

Csalog, who teaches chamber music at the Bela Bartok Conservatory in Budapest, will visit the UI as part of the School of Music's Piano Festival 2000-2001. During his visit to the UI campus, Csalog will present a master class with UI students at 9 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 4 in Clapp Recital Hall. The master class may be observed by the public free of charge. An annual event, the Piano Festival is a celebration of piano performance and teaching. It includes master classes and performances from outstanding visiting artist-teachers from around the world. Remaining events in Piano Festival 2000-2001 will be a recital and master class by Leonard Hokanson Feb. 24-25 and a recital and master class by Constance Keene March 25-26.
