Knezkova-Hussey, a concert pianist and composer, will combine opera, dance and orchestra. "Because of the historic scale of this production I will use many different styles of music to reflect the eras and the drama," Knezkova-Hussey says. "Of course, regardless of the period, it will be my own personal influences that will be reflected in my music. And also this is an Acadian theme, and much of the Acadian experience must be reflected in the music." Knezkova-Hussey will perform the work in Bathurst in June in conjunction with the international piano competition that bears her name.

Appearing on the Festival's podium this summer will be Mark Elder David Lockington Peter Oundjian Larry Rachleff Stefan Sanderling , and Mark Wigglesworth A Search Committee appointed by GTMF President Jayne Hilde and chaired by Allan Tessler began working through the process last winter once it was confirmed that Eiji Oue would leave the Festival to accept an invitation to mount a new production of Tristan and isolde at the Bayreuth Music Festival in Germany, a world-renowned festival devoted to the operas of the 19th-century German composer, Richard Wagner. Although Tessler states that there is no timetable for appointing a new Music Director, with the excellent prospects for 2004 and possibly for 2005, he expects that the position will be resolved with diligence and an exceptional candidate. According to Executive Director Don Reinhold, "It's not unusual for an orchestra to go one, or even two years without a Music Director. In the short run, these periods in an orchestra's life offer both the orchestra and public an interesting perspective of different musical viewpoints, and an opportunity to hear some great repertoire that might not have been the focus during Maestro Oue's tenure."

Why opera is hard to grasp, even in English DENVER (AP) Even opera buffs peek at the electronic subtitles when a diva rattles the chandelier with a soaring aria. It may sound beautiful. But what exactly is she singing? Scientists say you shouldn't blame your uncultured ears for not being able to understand the lyrics, even when they are in English.
