Extractions: http://www.passionforpiano.com Home of the PianoBlog January 2003 PianoBlog Jan-31-03 Rodent prognostications and more Well, just when I was getting used to January it up and leaves. Groundhog Day is just around the corner. Our resident weather rodent in Ontario is Wiarton Willie. There was a scandal a few years ago when it was discovered an imposter was posing as Willie and that Willie had gone on to groundhog heaven. Yes, it was a real cause celebre. Willie has also been threatened numerous times because his predictions are inevitably wrong. That anybody should rely on his predictions to the point of threatening him when he gets it wrong is deeply curious in the extreme. Says Willie in his own defense, 'I'm a groundhog for Pete's sake, I dunno nuttin' about weather.' I watched most of the Oscar Peterson show last night, unfortunately not all. He is amazing, only playing with his right hand with which he performs the miracle of sounding like two hands. Peterson had a stroke about ten years ago which disabled his left hand. I must say I'm having a ball with the Inventions. Most of them are RCM Grade 8 level but I found them quite difficult when I was doing Grade 8. I seem to have overcome whatever it was that made them seem so hard back then. I am getting #14 in B flat ready for my next lesson in two weeks time. I'm also going to spend some time on Lotus Land and get it ready too. I was so embarrassed by my performance at my lesson the other day I've now got to redeem myself.

Born in Lamèque, Duguay studied at the College de Bathurst and the New Brunswick Teachers' College. He furthered his musical education at l'École supérieure de musique Vincent d'lndy in Montreal, graduating with a bachelor's degree in piano, and then received his master's in 'Early Music' from the Université de Montréal. He began his professional career in Montreal and Toronto as an organist, harpsichordist, and chamber musician. Duguay returned to Lamèque in 1976, after an absence of nearly 15 years. His schedule was essentially focused on music. He gave private lessons and was organist and choir master in the parish of Notre-Dame-des Flots. He was one of the co-founders of the Conservatoire de musique de l'Acadie and one of the main advocates of the Chaîne culturelle de Radio-Canada in northeastern New Brunswick. His artistic talents and his involvement in the field, as well as his relentless work over many years certainly contributed to the success of this venture.
