Er wollte Liszt übertreffen, den größten Virtuosen aller Zeiten, den er so unnachahmlich spielte - in technischer Hinsicht ist es ihm gelungen. Niemand allerdings könnte je einen Horowitz übertreffen, auch wenn immer wieder ein neuer Horowitz ausgerufen wird, sobald ein Pianist seine Lust am Artistischen zur Schau stellt und weniger sein Interesse an der Musik bekundet. Der noble Geiger Nathan Milstein, ein Freund und Kammermusikpartner Horowitz schon in russischen Tagen, wusste: "Bei Horowitz muss man sich im Klaren sein, dass seine Kunst eng mit seiner neurotisch-hysterischen Natur zusammenhing."
