Extractions: BIS CD 1042 Following the acclaim of his first disc, Freddy Kempf plays Schumann , the young British pianist has now turned his attention to Rachmaninov. This is in many ways a finer disc, displaying a touch that is mercurial and a tone that gleams like a golden fleece. The sonorities are as fiery as the Phlegethon as Kempf steers a course through Rachmaninov's opulent sound-world. These are performances that float notes as gracefully as any and mix dizzying virtuosity with tempered poetry. The Second Sonata is extremely fine, and Kempf is quite incandescent in his handling of the glittering figuration. The opening chords are volcanic, erupting with a chaotic cloak of colour that mixes vermilion's with scorched yellows. The colours do not so much collide, as coalesce, as the densely chromatic decoration moves almost laterally into passages of the most intimate beauty. This is first and foremost a kaleidoscopic interpretation, one that, whilst perhaps lacking the monumental scale that Horowitz brought to the work, seeks refuge in the lyricism of the Rachmaninov of the Second Concerto. In fact, although Kempf plays the original 1913 version one is constantly aware of him looking back farther to the beginning of the century, and the Second Concerto of 1901, rather than the more contemporaneous Third Concerto from 1909.
Extractions: This sold out afternoon recital, showing that Freddy Kempf is now a firm favourite with Wigmore Hall audiences, proved an interesting test of both Kempfs physical stamina and his ability to tackle some of the supreme Everests of the solo piano repertoire. It was not all a success, Im afraid stretching from Bach, which displayed both a poverty of imagination and a fierce disregard for the music, to a mercurial and quite overwhelming performance of Chopins Four Ballades . Sandwiched between these two extremes was a reading of Schuberts great A major Sonata which at times touched the sublime, almost as if the hand of the composer were resting on the pianists young shoulders guiding him through this turbulent and emotional work. Kempf may grow into Bach or he might not. This performance of the

Extractions: The distinguished International Concert Pianist Peter Katin reminisces Over a spread of about six decades I think I can say that I have played on both the best and worst pianos to be encountered anywhere. At the beginning of my career pianos in the late 1940s were of necessity patched up; neither money nor materials being available. Even Steinway concert grands were not imported until 1951 and it says much for them that they were able to find ways of keeping pre-war pianos in such excellent condition. For the rest, my memories are of tramping round dark streets in order to find the hall where I was going to play, hospitality, alas, not being a priority, only to find that the instrument was probably too small for a hall, and was "looked after" by a local drawing-room tuner. On such pianos I had to play impossible programmes, after which I could hardly blame myself if the piano was almost wrecked.

Extractions: Three years ago, a little-known young pianist released his second disc with BIS. The pianist was Freddy Kempf and the music was by Rachmaninov. The CD was very warmly acclaimed Gramophone stated that "This is a very special record." and American Record Guide wrote "Kempf's sympathy with this repertoire is, in fact, frankly outstanding [...] This is a deeply, deeply satisfying recording." Since then Freddy Kempf has released a total of six CDs (including the recent Kempf Trio recording of piano trios by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov), and on this one he returns to the Russian territory that he loves so much. The programme chosen by Kempf is intriguing, including some of the earliest works Prokofiev wrote at the age of only 18 namely Piano Sonata No. 1 (Op. 1) and Étude No. 1 (from Op. 2), as well as works by the mature master.

Extractions: Symphonie Tzigane Tzigane More fireworks arrive on BIS-CD-1260, when the young British pianist Freddy Kempf brings a Yahama to near collapse with a Prokofiev recital, including the sixth and seventh sonatas, perhaps the most popular. The recording was made in Stockholm two years ago. Kempf was then 24, and his impetuous dash finds a perfect outlet in student works like the romantic little sonata of 1909 and the 1912 Toccata , a better sign of the Prokofiev to come.

Extractions: As the harmonic center of Freddy Kempf's piano recital Tuesday evening descended - C minor to B minor to -B-flat minor - the volume and interpretive intensity kept rising. By the end of the program, which opened the third annual Miami Festival of Discovery, it was easy to understand why there is considerable buzz about this young artist. Kempf, a Londoner just into his 20's experienced a kind of publicity generating godsend when he failed to win the 1998 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (he placed third), much to the displeasure of the public and press. As compensation, the pianist became an instant star, with recitals and TV appearances galore in Russia. Intriguingly, Ivo Pogorelich, who gave a dismaying performance in West Palm Beach earlier this month, went through something similar when he was eliminated from the 1980 Chopin Competition in Warsaw. But where Pogorelich went on to become possibly the most self-indulgent, artistically bizarre pianist in history, Kempf gives every indication of being a sensible, distinctive musician.

Extractions: Discovery Fest lives up to its name You just never know until you go. Freddy Kempf, the 23-year-old British pianist who has had London music lovers clamoring for tickets to his concerts, was supposed to be the slamdunk champion of this week's opening lineup in the Miami Festival of Discovery for young pianists. But the festival lived up to its name, and it presented a real discovery: Denis Burstein, a 22-year-old genius from Moscow. Not that Kempf, who came first, was a calamitous letdown. He has gobs of talent, including trip-hammer fingers and a penchant for taking pieces at a furious clip that made Schumann's Toccata possible the fastest performance on record. There were good things about it even at that lightning pace, notably the softly light-fingered passages, despite some blurring. But there was also a lot of exaggeratedly loud grandstanding in Rachmaninoff's Second Sonata, which Kempf powered up as if he'd been listening too much to Vladimir Horowitz's volcanic recordings. Naturally it takes talent even to imitate Horowitz, but that crashingly loud climax lacked taste, and there's far more poetry in the music than Kempf found.
