Most of it is lost, and Robert King and Hyperion have been performing a great service by bringing us the 50 or so compositions that remain. This Volume 7 of their "Sacred Music" series offers five rarely heard works, all of them displaying Vivaldi's characteristic genius with their long and lovely vocal lines, skillfully written choruses, and ingenious and imaginative orchestration. The soloists are splendid, and I'm particularly impressed with Carolyn Sampson, previously unknown to me, who sings the solo passages in Laudate pueri Alex Morin +++++ More Quick Auditions +++++ Super-Tune CDs Times Four! Extractions: published February 14, 2003 The Central Florida Philharmonic Orchestra will salute some of the best classical composers when it performs its "Here Come The Russians" concert. Under the direction of Susan Bailey Robinson, the Philharmonic will perform music by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Sergei Prokofiev and Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The concert also will feature pianist Maeve Brophy, who made her orchestral debut in 1998 at the age of 15 with a Rachmaninoff concerto. She also represented the United States at the Third International Competition for Young Pianists in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz the same year in Kiev, Ukraine. Brophy is a student of Yakov Kasman, silver medalist of the 1997 Van Cliburn competition for pianists. The program begins with The Great Russian Easter Overture by Rimsky-Korsakov, featuring woodwinds and a cello solo in the first movements, leading to a second theme that rises to a coda and is recalled with trombones and strings.
