Extractions: Recordare Announces MusicXML 1.0 LOS ALTOS, CA (January 14, 2004) Recordare LLC, an Internet music software and publishing company, has released version 1.0 of MusicXML. MusicXML is the first file format that allows the common Western music notation used in printed sheet music to be fully shared among a wide range of computer applications. Recordare has also released new versions of its Dolet for Finale and Dolet for Sibelius plug-ins that support MusicXML 1.0. The Dolet plug-ins serve as "universal translators" between music notation programs. Dolet for Finale 1.3 reads and writes MusicXML files, allowing Finale to communicate with any other application that supports MusicXML. Dolet for Sibelius 1.1 writes MusicXML files that can be shared with users of Finale, Turandot, and other programs that can read MusicXML. "While MusicXML support has been shipping with Finale and SharpEye Music Reader for some time, we wanted real-life experience with a wider range of applications before releasing version 1.0," stated Michael Good, CEO of Recordare LLC. "Now that applications such as MuseBook Score and the Rosegarden sequencer use MusicXML, we have reached that goal." Korean pianist Choong-Mo Kang used AMuseTecs MuseBook Score in his December 20 performance of Bachs Well-Tempered Clavier II at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall. The MuseBook is an electronic music stand that displays MusicXML scores and automates page turns for the performer. "The MusicXML format is a great interface for various musical needs," stated Doill Jung, CEO of AMuseTec Co., Ltd. "MusicXML is very well-suited as a solution for us, and I hope it will be the standard of the music industry in the near future."

Extractions: [Letters to the Editor]Bach was no ascetic As a long-time fan of your newspaper, I would like to comment that Warren Lee`s article about pianist Kang Choong-mo, "Daring piano venture leads back to Bach" (The Korea Herald, Dec. 18) was most informative and enjoyable. I just would like to add my view that Bach cannot really be considered an "ascetic." Bach is considered one of the two towering geniuses of Western music, the other being Mozart. One indicator is that neither did hardly any revising (this was even mentioned in the famous movie about Mozart, "Amadeus"). It applies to Bach as well. In both men, the music flowed direct from their brains through their hands and onto the page - no revision necessary - and their music was as perfect as imperfect man could produce, a tremendous quantity, and not at all "simple." The other musical geniuses were not quite that high, as they all had to revise to some extent, some more than others. Their music is beautiful, but they didn`t hear it perfectly enough to simply write it down just right. But I am afraid I cannot say Bach was an ascetic. My dictionary defines an ascetic as, "a person who renounces material comforts and leads a life of austere self-discipline and self-denial, especially for spiritual improvement or as an act of religious devotion."

Main ASTRO's COO David Butorac announced recently that his company - Malaysia's monopoly satellite TV operator - will raise its monthly subscription fee by RM5 effective May 24. Don't ever think RM5 is petty cash if you apply the principle of the Chinaman's Business Model StarBiz says the price hike may add RM83mil to its annual sales given its subscriber base of 1.39 million people at the end of January. Consumer angst has been picked up and highlighted prominently in the Chinese Press because the community has cried foul over the price hike. The general perception is that ( 1 ) ASTRO can't charge more until it upgrades the Quality of Service (QoL) during the rainy seasons and thunderstoms; ( 2 ) It's unfair for a subscription TV to have overloads of advertisements; ( 3 ) A price hike has been already effected through the ASTRO Flexi-Packages ; ( 4 ) There were too many repeats in its programming. Tatparanandam Ananda Krishnan 's coffers. But you have to salute the Indian-Malaysian who knows how to dip his fingers into the pockets of his Chinese and Malay brethren on a recurring basis.
