Warren Jones Indispensable Partner November 1, 1999 Version française. The San Francisco Examiner has calledpianist warren jones the single finest accompanist now working . http://www.scena.org/lsm/sm5-3/WarrenJones-en.htm
Extractions: The San Francisco Examiner has called pianist Warren Jones "the single finest accompanist now working". Jones, who has played with such great artists as Marilyn Horne, Kathleen Battle, Denyce Grayes and Olaf Baer, will be touring several American cities with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa in the next few weeks. In an interview given to La Scena in June, he talked about his views on accompanying and the tremendous joys it brings him. The 47-year-old dynamo stepped onstage when he was five and has never looked back. Jones considers making music with someone else to be one of life's "wonderful experiences". It's a way of knowing people in a non-verbal manner, of feeling "shared energy". To develop a successful working relationship, soloist and pianist must respect each other's abilities. The accompanist is an equal partner, said Jones, and he was happy to report that attitudes on this subject are changing. He recalled an incident in 1997 when he was a juror at the Van Cliburn competition. A woman came up to him and asked, "Should I call you an accompanist or a collaborator?" His reply was a true cry from the heart: "Just call me a pianist!" Jones felt that good technique is merely a starting point for making music. The first thing he looks for in a student is the ability to get along with other musicians. He compared the bond between soloist and pianist to a love relationship: "First you must know yourself then you know the other."

Extractions: By Chris Hovan Since 1995, Blue Note has been pleasing hardcore fans with a special reissue series that sports a very simple premise: well print up some of the catalogs most obscure titles as long as you buy them up quickly, because theyll only be around for a limited time. As a result, weve seen a great degree of variety within the catalog, from the early recordings of German pianist Jutta Hipp to the post hard bop implications of Pete LaRocas Basra . This latest series of Connoisseur titles is no exception as far as diversity goes, although in two cases we get material that has been highly sought after for years (more on that later), making this one of the more exhilarating reissue batches in recent memory.

Extractions: Welcome to the sleeve notes for my CD, Why Try To Change Me Now? I decided not to have any specific notes for each track in the CD booklet because, hey, that's what technology's for, right, so you can have fun visiting this page and finding out more information? I used the CD booklet to list those specifically involved with the project and to say a word or two about the co-writer of my songs, Sarah Travis and my Musical Director, Warren Wills. I haven't thanked everybody who has been involved in my career and my life up until this project because it would be a very long list and it's not my style. I am British after all! But, in case you're wondering who Mary Hammond and Di Owen are, (I do thank them), Mary is my singing teacher (a term I prefer to vocal coach, because she has actually taught me to sing in a different way) and Di is my friend who very kindly put me in touch with the CD's designer, Marcus, and oversaw all that side of things pro gratis. Sarah, who by this time was an old friend, encouraged me to write some songs about a disastrous love affair I'd had that would have involved years of therapy, had that been my style (see above!) I love writing with Dillie; I've been doing it since 1984; but, in this instance, I had to write these songs on my own. I discovered that I write in more of a jazz style, that the time will switch from 3/4 to 4/4 or 5/4, for no other reason than that's how I've heard it in my head. Sarah arranged the songs and often suggested an extension of melody here and there and so my little solo show came into being, which I took to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1991. Nica directed and Sarah played. I shall always be grateful that Sarah agreed to do so because her real job was to be Dillie's pianist at the same festival. (And thank you, Dillie, for letting me share her.) The Hong Kong Fringe Festival director was at Edinburgh and booked me for his festival the following January.
